In KDE 4.14.3 goto System Settings -> Window Behavior -> Task Switcher, on the main tab under Visualization change the drop down to Cover Switch. Check out the star button to Get New Window Switcher Layouts and you might find a better one there.

In Plasma 5 go to System Settings -> Window Management. The "Navigation Through Windows" dialog page appears. In the "Visualization" section set the kind of alt + tab visualization you want. Then click the button "Apply" in the bottom right.
