Hello,
I don't understand why this is what I see when I press Fn+brightness(up/down): ![]() As you can see, the icon on the left is not a monitor, as it should be. As for the Fn+volume(up/down) key, it works fine. The speaker icon appears. It would probably be a problem related to my account, because if I switch to a test user account, this problem doesn't occur. As you can understand, I cannot erase my ~/.kde4 directory just for this issue only. So please, could you help me to understand what the problem is? Thanks. |

Please try removing /var/tmp/kdecache-$USER/ outside KDE.
Also, please check under ~/.local/share/icons/ to see if you have any icons there which could be interfering. Moving that folder elsewhere, then logging out and back in should be enough to put the change into effect.

Hi bcooksley,
thanks for replying. Unfortunately the ~/.local/share/icons/ directory doesn't exist. Furthermore, deleting the /var/tmp/kdecache-$USER/ directory (then logoff and login) didn't solve the problem. Please notice also that I have three icon themes under System Settings->Application appearance->Icons->Theme: "GNOME", "Oxygen" and "Oxygencolors(v5.1)", but the problem occours with every one I use. Due to this additional theme, I have icons under ~/.kde4/share/icons/oxygencolors(v5.1), but I don't think it's due to such directory, since the problem happens even before installing such new icon theme. Thank you. |

If you try under a new user, can you reproduce?

No, actually in the first post I've written:

If you open System Settings, does "Display and Monitor" have the correct icon?

Yes, it does.

Can you check to see if any png files exist under ~/.kde*, ~/.config or ~/.local?

I have a lot of png files there, and this is the output of the command.
I've never found out the exact conflicting file(s). |

Okay, that looks innocent enough.
The name of the icon it should be displaying is 'video-display', but it is falling back to the icon 'video'. Only reason this should occur is because the icon is not available at the desired size and cannot be scaled down from a different size (due to the lack of the icon at all). Unfortunately I am pretty much out of ideas. Try running a search for "video*.png" using the same find command, and ignoring the oxygencolors theme, see what results you get.

Ignoring the oxygencolors theme I don't have any output.
Thanks for your effort. |

Ok, it might be worth trying something more drastic here.
Can you backup ~/.kde* then move them elsewhere outside your session, and see if that corrects the problem? If it does, then we know where to dig and can continue searching for this issue. (Once you have completed your test, remove the newly created ~/.kde* directories, and move your old ones back in place).

With a very big surprise, deleting all .kde* files/directories inside my home didn't solve my problem!
Very strange! |

Ok, could you try with ~/.config and ~/.local as well please?
I would recommend making a backup of ~/.kde* as well here, as these directories are all interconnected.

Even in this case nothing changed.
