Hi all,

I tried to install Screenlets, which prompted a reboot. After rebooting, my desktop looked like Ubuntu 11.10, i.e., it was running Unity! I've managed to uninstall Unity (uninstalled Screenlets too of course), and have got Plasma desktop back again in a very basic form, but I've lost all my settings, and the general style looks like an old version of Gnome.

Here's a screenshot, resized down: http://img692.imageshack.us/img692/5752/snapshot1rj.png

What else do I need to do?

Many thanks,

Tom

Maybe this is a better example:

So you can see in the snapshot above that I am trying to apply the Oxygen theme. There are no error messages, but the system resolutely sticks to the theme it already has.

you might need to reset your windows and plasma to defaults, could there be any gnome/gtk apps running ? maybe nautilus?

to set kwin to defaults rename/delete ~/.kde/share/config/kwinrc

to reset plasma to defaults
Code: Select all
kquitapp plasma-desktop
 sleep 20s
 mkdir -p $HOME/plasma-config/
 mv $(kde4-config --localprefix)/share/config/plasma-desktop* $HOME/plasma-config/
plasma-desktop &

Hi, thanks for the reply.

I did as you suggested, which did restart my plasma-desktop, placing the taskbar back at the bottom of the screen (I have it at the top), and reverting to what looks like an older default wallpaper than Kubuntu 11.10 came with. As far as everything else goes, I still have problems; still got the old icons/theme, cannot re-size windows (once they are at max size they are stuck there), ALT+F2 doesn't respond, cannot shutdown from menu (have to use CTRL+ALT+DEL). This is a capture of what happened when I followed you instructions above:

EDIT: Incidentally, I tried setting up a new profile to see if a new login would set everything right, but the new login just gets a blank medium-blue screen, but can be logged back out with CTRL-ALT-DEL

lets try the following:

1) remove your KDE cache - logout of KDE and in virtual terminal Alt+Ctrl+F1 or in failsafe mode remove the folder /var/tmp/kdecache-your_account_name

2) remove ~/.config/Trolltech.conf

3) restart KDE and rebuild system config cache kbuildsycoca4 --noincremental

the not being able to login as a new user I'm not sure about, maybe start a new thread specific to that

Not the way I would have liked to have resolved this, but as I had all my data backed up on another partition, I did a clean install from the CD-ROM. I think the afternoon's work installing programmes and returning all my settings etc. to how I like them was looking like it was going to be the path of least resistance!

Thanks very much for replying though. :)

fyi - assuming you installation got corrupted by the installation and then removal of Unity, which it appears it did, you should have been able to force an update of all your packages instead of doing a clean install.

I had done the clean install before I read your last post, but thanks for the replies and advice.
