Hello! (I love the clean design of this forum!)
I just installed a fresh copy of Kubuntu 12.04 (KDE 4.8.2) on my desktop. I was previously using 11.10, which worked perfectly fine. The live boot and install went fine. When rebooting, I was able to use the KDM login screen just fine. However, once booting into the desktop, I am unable to click anything above the bottom KDE panel. Mouse clicks are simply not registered. For instance, I can open and close application launcher by clicking it's button, but I cannot click any items within the launcher. Any windows open cannot interact with the mouse. Keyboard input works just fine.. and needless to say the mouse operates normally under Windows. I thought the issue may be compositing effects, or the number of desktops. Changing desktops to 1 did nothing. Switching off desktop effects, and logging back in seemed to fix the issue! But after rebooting, the issue persisted. And after further testing, I have found that logging out and back in fixes it, and rebooting breaks it, regardless of effects settings. I also tried the proprietary Catalyst drivers, but they had no effect. I have searched around and could not find any solutions. I think the issue is similar to this: viewtopic.php?f=66&t=101178&hilit=cannot+click. I would greatly appreciate any help anyone could offer. I do not mind Unity, but I really would prefer Kubuntu. I would prefer not to switch to Linux Mint KDE either, and certainly not to a non Debian-based distro. My other choice is sticking with 11.10, but backported KDE binaries may bring the issue back. I posted this on the Ubuntu forums, but got no answer. This makes the desktop much more of a hassle to use... Thanks again for any help!

Interesting. I will also try out closing/restarting kwin and seeing if the behavior changes too, when I get home to my desktop later. I would assume yes, since logging out and back in fixes the issue for me (Until the next reboot), which would involve a kwin restart.
Concerning window focus issues, perhaps it is a problem with window behavior? I remember seeing settings for "Focus stealing prevention" or something of that nature.. perhaps related? Edit: I turned on my desktop and everything is working? I don't understand why this issue fixed itself, considering I have not installed any updates or basically touched it since leaving it in it's broken state last night. Regardless, I do not feel this is solved, and I am rather afraid it will happen again. I will keep up with this, and would like to know what you discover, sjzurek. |

Bringing the dead, just to say that this issue still happens in a fresh 2013 install (kubuntu 13.04).

Can you verify that a window manager (ie. KWin) is actually running? It certainly sounds like a focus issue.

I have the same issue on a fresh install of 13.04. Brand new razor mouse moves but there is no effect when i click on some windows. Keyboard confirms that KDE is not frozen. Xev shows no output when i try and click where nothing happens. I have tried other mice all with the same issue. nothing is dmesg.

The issue seems to also show up during the installer process.

@urbanride: Please open a seperate topic for that issue, it sounds like the system may not be registering the mouse clicks - or an application is stealing pointer focus and not releasing it.

Does the mouse work on another system? It could be a fault with the mouse not sending the clicks to the system, particularly if all windows are affected.

I've got the same problem. Keyboard works everywhere, mouse clicks only work in unity. I'm a Linux noob, so I don't know keyboard shortcuts well enough to get around. This is in standard ubuntu, so I don't think switching to standard ubuntu will work for you. Additionally, when I boot off the live CD, I get no mouse click response at all. The cursor moves, but its like clicks aren't registered.

I'm a Linux newbie too and this mouse issue has been a nightmare that is keeping me from fully utilizing Linux.
I started out with openSuse Leap and the mouse registration issue made it unusable. This was happening in all desktop environments, and I tried all of the ones available for openSuse. I ended up reinstalling numerous times and the problem persisted. I tried installing with GNOME and default DE and I still had the same problem. I even tried installing a magnetic HD instead of an SSD and mouse clicks stop registering during installation. That made me give up on openSuse Leap for the foreseeable future. After that I tried Fedora which did not seem to have issues with mouse clicks but I could not get the sound to work so I moved on from it probably too quickly. After that, I installed Linux Mint Cinnamon and I am running into the same problem there. Logging in and out seems to fix the problem until next reboot. That made me give Fedora another shot and I started testing Korora 23 now. The sound works on this distribution and I haven't run into the mouse click registration problem yet, but I haven't used it enough to be certain. I colleague of mine, to whom I have given an openSuse Leap disk, reported having the same issue but it seems to have just gone away for now. He's not using that computer much though. One thing is clear, and that is that it's not an issue with KDE but a problem with Linux. I'll be able to tell if it's a problem with Linux in general or only with some distributions after I spend some more time with Korora. |

If you use KRunner to ask KWin to quit, does this behaviour change?

I have been experiencing this issue too, and I have solved it by uninstalling fingerprint-gui (the uninstallation is tricky, see https://launchpad.net/~fingerprint/+arc ... rprint-gui). It appears that fingerprint-gui requests finger scan via a panel which is invisible in most apps, and can be hidden by killing the process or scanning a finger. The panel is probably visible on fullscreen, I have first seen it in tuxracer. The same issue is also discussed and solved here: https://forum.manjaro.org/t/kde-menu-ba ... ouse/10078
