Cannot not start ksmserver

Thu Jun 14, 2012 10:35 am
Hi, I'm using KDE 4.7.2 / openSUSE 12.1 and I cannot start ksmserver (unless I trick startkde to bypass check for errors). Even so I cannot logout
Code: Select all
[pascal@pascaLinux:~] $qdbus org.kde.ksmserver /KSMServer logout 0 0 0

[pascal@pascaLinux:~] $
with no lines appended in .xsession-errors.

Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance,

Pascal

With reference to post viewtopic.php?f=66&t=19273, I should add that, firstly kdesupport is not available to my distribution and secondly file /usr/share/kde4/services/kded/kdedglobalaccel.desktop is missing.

Is it necessary to install kdesupport and if so how?

Does this help?

It appears that both ksmserver and kded4 are both crashing out at the same place.
If you try and run "ksmserver" or "kded4" yourself, does it output anything relevant?

I suspect you may have either an incomplete installation or updates which are not fully applied.

I removed all updates since openSUSE 12.1 and then carefully re-installed all the updates by adding one repository after the other and doing
Code: Select all
zypper ref
zypper dup
each time one repository was added and testing for problems hoping to find the culprit. Apparently, at the end of this process everything worked fine and I'm still looking for the cause that triggered the problem.

Anyway, thanks for answering my call for help,

Pascal
