Using Debian Squeeze with KDE4.
Install fluxbox and openbox and noticed that in KDM (and SystemSettings->Default Applicatoin->Window Manager), there's an option of openbox/KDE but no fluxbox/KDE. Any idea how to configure Fluxbox as KDE4 windows managers? |

Hi michalng
Please see /usr/bin/openbox-kde-session file. It seems that running KDE with another window manager is only matter of setting KDE_WM variable and running startkde command. I have copied /usr/bin/openbox-kde-session to /usr/bin/fluxbox-kde-session and superseded "openbox" with "fluxbox" in it's content. Then, I have copied /usr/share/xsessions/openbox-kde.desktop to /usr/share/xsessions/fluxbox-kde.desktop and again superseded "openbox" with "fluxbox". The latter file is for KDM. This way I can login using "KDE/Fluxbox" session from KDM menu. Quick test have showed that everything is working just fine. All windows have Fluxbox decorations, shortcuts from ~/.fluxbox/keys are executed just fine (please note that Alt+F2 will open fbrun, not KRunner). There may be some rough edges, though. I have only used it for about minute or two. By the way, why use Fluxbox with KDE? I have been using Fluxbox for about five years before I have switched to KDE SC. I have configured all my keyboard shortcuts in KWin. After little configuration (mostly disabling some animations), I feel like using Fluxbox - but visually it is a lot better ![]() Also, as far I as remember, there is no thing that can be done in Fluxbox that can not be done in Openbox. But Openbox on KDE seems to be somehow officially supported, so there may be more people capable of answering any questions, if they arise.
Best regards

You are correct
![]() openbox, fluxbox and KDE can be configured to almost identical. Using fluxbox because the configuration is more simple (text file) as compare to opebox (xml). I use KDE witht the new computers and fluxbox on the older machines. |
