This should be dead easy, but I seem to be unable to find the magic google terms.

I configured a second and third X screen (no Xinerama and all that) in xorg.conf. They are working, because I can see the typical X-cursor on them and move it around. So the next step is to automatically start a KDE desktop on them at login. How do I do that?

The system is Kubuntu Intrepid Ibex with KDE 4.1, using kdm as the login manager.

I'm having the same problem. I can start apps on :0.1, but no desktop support.

Multihead multi-monitor mode is not maintained by any developer. There is a little bit of work currently being done for 4.2 but I do not know if it will fix every single error and crash.

Use Xinerama/TwinView/BigDesktop/Whatever.

I switched to KDE from Gnome because it could handle multiple desktops and multiple screens quite well. Now I'm going have to look elsewhere, at least until this is fixed. I just don't like Xinerama/Twinview/...

So is this a KDE 4 thing? In 3.5, just adding an extra X-screen in xorg.conf meant KDE started automatically, but this functionality has been lost for the time being in KDE 4?

Xinerama/twinview etc. is not an option for me since the extra screen I really care about is a tv, hooked up via the tv-out of my Hauppauge 350 tv-card (not my videocard).

How about Gnome, will that work?

Well, in the latest KDE 3 update on Kubuntu Hardy there is a new bug. When you fullscreen a window on the second monitor it only expands to the size of the primary monitor (which on my laptop is smaller).

XFCE4 handles this correctly. It does not have the same facilities for keeping windows on certain desktops which is the reason I went to KDE.

Is this the KDE 3.5.9 -> 3.5.10 update or a distro-specific update? Unless I'm horribly mistaken I believe that KWin did not change at all between those two versions as it is unmaintained by us.

Hello, I am afraid that the problem is hidden in the KDE 3.5.10. Due to its presence, I am still using KDE 3.5.9 (on Kubuntu 8.0.4). When I've tried to do full system update, I ended with peculiar problem like jchoning has described.

But recently I gave a try to OpenSUSE 11.1, which comes with 3.5.10 version of KDE. Same effect, and additionaly there are no windows decorations.

Hardware: Nvidia Go 7300 chip, dual screen 1280x800 + 1680x1050 external, xorg set as Separate Screens.

Is there any way out of this situation? I do not want to go GNOME.

I can confirm this with Debian Lenny, using KDE 3.5.10 and KWin 3.0. The biggest annoyance besides maximising windows is that right-clicking on panel on bottom of screen opens menu below panel not visible at all.

I'm having resolution 1920x1200 on my right hand side as my main screen and 1280x1024 left of main screen.

I tried setting my second screens bottom edge in level with my main screen using absolute positioning in xorg.conf but X refused to work with that so it was of no use.

I'm using Nvidia 8800gt as my graphics controller. Displays are configured to work as separate screens.

I also tried same config I'm using now with gnome and it worked like it should. Also things worked ok with KDE when I set my main screen to use resolution 1600x1024, ie. equal height. With twinview things work ok, but I do prefer separate screens.

Where should I start to look to solve this problem?
