I grabbed the run file from the amd site. Completed that successfully choosing the distro specific option. Installed the 3 deb pkg files successfully. I an aticonfig --inital and I rebooted. My screen settings would only max out at 1280 x1024 but I should be able to run 1680x1050. Auto update said fglxr had updates. So I updated and rebooted(even though nothing actually said I needed to). After reboot I am still stuck at 1280x1024. I also noticed my refresh rate has the option of auto or 0.0. How can I get the full resolution back?

Are you getting a selection of resolutions, or simply a very basic set of safe resolutions?
If it is a basic set, I would advise checking your monitor connection, and removing any extension cables (which often don't have all the pins connected, preventing EDID data from being read).

Did you grab the latest Catalyst 13.1 or 13.2 beta? If you run Catalyst Control Center (Administrative) and go to Display Manager, Display properties, is there no option for 1680 x 1050?

I am getting a few resolutions, section or safe I have no idea. I can only say that the KDE Display and Monitor app provided a few resolutions, but nothing over 1050 even though the monitor natively supports 1680x1050. As for cables, just a DVI cable. Nothing fancy.
I am not sure of the version but i cant imagine it was the beta. Nothing I saw indicated beta. As for CCC, I tried to open it only to get an error that the drivers were missing..

I thought so--you didn't install the drivers correctly, somehow. What I would do is reinstall them. The following always works for me, making appropriate changes to the file name (I'm using 13.2 beta 6 here). (I stole these instructions from somewhere, but I can't recall where.)
To remove Catalyst drivers sudo apt-get remove --purge xorg-driver-fglrx fglrx* sudo apt-get install --reinstall libgl1-mesa-glx libgl1-mesa-dri fglrx-modaliases sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg sudo apt-get install --reinstall xserver-xorg-core To install manually #First install of AMD Catalyst #prerequisite packages# sudo apt-get install build-essential cdbs dh-make dkms sudo apt-get install execstack dh-modaliases fakeroot libqtgui4 # If you are 64 bit, install these too sudo apt-get install ia32-libs ia32-libs-multiarch:i386 sudo apt-get install lib32gcc1 libc6-i386 cd /usr ; sudo ln -svT lib /usr/lib64 # Go into your Downloads folder (I suppose you have already download the driver) cd Downloads # Make the package executable chmod +x amd-driver-installer-catalyst-13.2-beta6-linux-x86.x86_64 # Create and install deb packages sudo sh ./amd-driver-installer-catalyst-13.2-beta6-linux-x86.x86_64 --buildpkg Ubuntu/quantal sudo dpkg -i fglrx*.deb # Enable new settings sudo aticonfig --initial -f # Reboot |

I see some errors while installing the deb files. Nto sure if it is relevant. Rebooting in a moment to test your method.

And that's a fail. Rebooted, tried to launch CCC and still get the error:
There was a problem initializing Catalyst Control Center Linux edition. It could be caused by the following. No AMD graphics driver is installed, or the AMD driver is not functioning properly. Please install the AMD driver appropriate for you AMD hardware, or configure using aticonfig.

FYI. fglrx-modaliases has been depreciated beyond lucid.

The error in this case appears to be:
Can you check "/var/lib/dkms/fglrx/8.970/build/make.log" please?

You'll need to ask AMD/ATI support about that - looks like a problem in their source code (or your compiler is more strict than what they are expecting).
