After upgrading KDE to 4.10.1 (Kubuntu 12.04) the task manager no longer shows entries of any windows minimized or not. I checked the task manager settings and didn'y see anything out of place. I tried deleting the task manage from the panel and adding a new one. That didn't help either. if I change a task manager setting I think I can see a very quick redraw of the panel.
Any ideas what might be happening? |

I made a new user and it works fine there. I made a new panel for the problem user and that didn't help. It seems as if the entries show up and disappear instantly. Kmail seems to display and stay sometimes, but not reliably. When I ran kbuildsycoca4 as shown, the problem remained. It did show several errors, that I'm not sure the significance of:

those message are usually warning and ignorable
you might have a corrupt config file slightly extreme but try resetting your plasma desktop to default, of course we'll back it up first

That was cool, I learned something. But it didn't work. It's frustrating. I'm so relient on my desktop setup. Since a blank user works it seems like it's got to be something local. What could I do to do the least starting over? |

didn't ask
- the task manager takes up the expected space on the panel? - clicking on the space doesn't change window? - everything else works fine in plasma? did you try a different task manager - fancy, smooth or icon-only? you can clean your kde cache but need to be done when your session not running, its folder /var/tmp/kdecasche_user-name |

you can kill kquitapp plasma-desktop then start it in a Konsole window and look for "task" related errors, be warned there will be lots of output so you'll want to use find

I didn't know about those. Funny the icon only one didn't work but the smooth did. I kind of like it after I got it to show more than just an icon, so I guess I'm good. Not fond of leaving something broken, but this works. Thanks for your help, I appreciate it, no task manager was driving me crazy. |

you shouldn't mark this as solved, there may be an alternative but there's still some thing amiss in your config
what desktop theme are you using - try changing to oxygen (just grasping at straws here) |

I've tried changing desktop themes and window manager themes, putting everything to oxygen, and a lot of other things. It's interesting that the icon-only task manager also doesn't work. No this is not solved, just worked around. I'll leave it open. I get a little nervous about unseen effects when something's not working right, but as far as having a working task manager goes, after playing with it a bit I'm really happy with the forked smooth task widget. Thanks for suggesting a new one. |

Have you tried changing the filters in the Task Manager applet configuration?
The defaults include filters for activities among other things, which may be what is broken under your normal user.

Hi, same problem here... but finally got solved! Just uncheck "Show only tasks for current activity" (or something like that; my desktop is not in english) on task manager, just like bcooksley suggest (this is a bug I fear).
Greetings. |

@Vayu: Does this solve your issue, as it did for MetalByte?

The only one I had checked was show only from the current desktop. I tried other combinations as well. (not rigorously enough for a definitive answer though). I don't really want to try to get that problem back. I installed smooth tasks and it's been working great, even though icon only and one other one I tried all had the same problem. |

Same here, a few days after updated to 4.10.1 (on OpenSuse 12.3 x32)
From console user I removed: ~/.kde4/share/config/activitymanagerrc ~/.kde4/share/apps/plasma-desktop/activities and after logged in, taskmanagers(icon based and default) began to work properly until logged out. When I tried to solve this, added new activity(empty), next stopped "Default" activity and was not able to start "Default", after few tries to start "Default" plasma crashed(see backtrace #1 #2). In this point I had one activity "empty", and no access to windows from activity "Default", but taskmanagers working properly with new opened windows, until logged out. Both scenarios are fully reproducible(this is why I have second backtrace). Maybe worth mentioning: one time I saw at index 0 (from left) "undefined" activity (on index 1 was "empty"), it was not possible to remove, rename or start that "undefined" activity, also I can't reproduce that scenario. "Show only tasks for current activity" when set off is a partially workaround, related to this commit: b268a60fa7... possibility to use kwin fancy switcher instead of plain list, when switching between windows in group, will be not possible (and this is the main reason, why I writing in this thread). backtrace #1: http://paste.kde.org/714644/ backtrace #2: http://paste.kde.org/714650/ ps. sorry for my english |
