Hi,

Sometimes my system freezes at startup.
My main hw config: video card ati msi r6800 and proprietary drivers fglrx 13.1, cpu Intel i5-2500 sandy bridge.
One month ago I deleted .kde folder in order to clean system up but it did not solve the problem.
I use ppa:kubuntu-ppa/backports to update kde on ubuntu.
I have no scripts at startup, my user application on startup are: redshift, GoldenDict, dropbox gnome, teamviewer and cairo-dock latest version

Here are my logs about the freeze of today:
kernlog: http://pastebin.com/raw.php?i=W2UMY7g5
Xorg.0.log: http://pastebin.com/raw.php?i=WpqjVEZ3

The relevant message from the kernel log in this case is:
Code: Select all
[fglrx] ASIC hang happened

This indicates that you are hitting a bug in the fglrx (Proprietary Ati) driver. I would suggest reporting it to them, assuming you are using the latest available version, and it is supported. There is not much we can suggest in this instance (although you could try disabling desktop effects).

ok thanks, at least I know the problem. I have ati proprietary driver v13.1 so the last version.
I can try disabling desktop effects and see what happens thanks.
However (off topic) I would like to replace fglrx driver with open driver but the problem is the gpu temperature, it reaches 70C° with open, instead max 40C° with fglrx. If I find a solution for that (something like automatic fan control with open drivers that works as good as with fglrx drivers) I can solve my problem. Also plymouth effects work only with fglrx drivers, I don't know if maybe my problem is related with plymouth

I'm surprised that Plymouth works with fglrx - as fglrx does not support KMS, which I am fairly sure Plymouth uses.

With regards to GPU temperature management, I would suggest asking around the 'radeon' driver community. Things in this area change fairly frequently.

I know and I remember I have had some troubles to make it works but playmouth works now with fglrx drivers.
However I will make a search about radeon driver ubuntu temperature and hope to find something interesting.

Thanks
