Setting monitor priority does not work

Hi all,

I have two display devices: Monitor (identified as DF3) and TV (identified as DF2); and I want to use the display mode "extended desktop" with my monitor as the primary display device. I set it all in KDE settings and everything works fine. However, after reboot the monitor is no longer the primary one, system switch it to the TV (and I always have to turn on TV to log in), and the KDE setting is changed to "Nothing" (and I have to re-set it back to DF3). So, the question is "How to make the system keep the setting"?

btw. When I was trying to set up the extended desktop, KDE did not allow me to save the setting (it was automatically returned to "duplicate"), so I had to do it via Catalyst Control Center. Unfortunately, I did not find how to set up the primary display device in CCC (if there is an interference between CCC and KDE).

A small progress: I clicked on the button "Save as default" in the KDE setting and my monitor is the primary display device after login. However (!), the login screen is sill on TV :(

The login screen is handled independently from the actual workspace (it's another process running). What login manager are you using? KDM or LightDM?

Which graphics card and driver are you using?
Also, do you know if you are using the older krandr or the newer KScreen? It sounds like you might be using krandr - which was known for not applying settings properly.

I am now on a different computer so I cannot check it. However, according to figures I searched on google, I have krandr. How to migrate it to KScreen? Just change the packages?

KScreen is usually defaulted to by a distribution if it was available at the time of release, so it probably is not possible to convert to it in this case.

It seems that it is not part of OpenSUSE 12.3. So, do you have any idea how to set up KDM?

As far as I can tell, you need to create a script which calls the right xrandr commands and call it from KDM. I've done that however a very long time ago, so I'm not sure on the specific details.

I tried to add
Code: Select all
xrandr --output DFP3 --primary

to /etc/X11/xdm/Xsetup but without success :-\

If the output "DFP3" is not lit at the time you run that command you may need to add a "--auto" in there as well, to ensure the correct resolution, etc get selected for it.

The funny thing is that TV (DF2) is always off (but connected) and monitor (DF3) is always on during log in.
