I am running KDE 4.10.3 on Ubuntu 13.04 --- almost default install.

In System Settings - Date and Time, the check-box 'Set date and time automatically' was not initially checked. In Time Zone, Kolkata was selected.

I checked 'Set date and time automatically' box and the time was set to GMT. I unchecked the box, set time manually and clicked OK. The time shown was proper.

However, since then. every time the computer wakes up from sleep or is restarted, the time jumps back to GMT. Very annoying.

What is happening? How do I set it right?

You may want to try if this issue occurs also before logging in. Set the date, log out (stay at the display manager prompt), then suspend from there. Resume, and check the date from a virtual console (the "date" command suffices). See if it got reset also in this case.

Did as suggested.

Set the date. Logged out. Display manager (KDM) shows the correct time.

Could not suspend, so restarted.

On restart, for a moment, KDM displayed the correct time then switched to GMT again! I switched to a console (Alt-Ctl-F1) anyway. date -R shows:

Does your system sync time over NTP?

Not to the best of my knowledge.

Also, this trouble started AFTER I did the changes I have mentioned.

Help, team! This is getting frustrating! I have had to set-up time every time the system suspends/ restart!

This is a known KDE bug. Here is just one report: https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=320456 and another: https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=318709. There is a discussion about it over on the Kubuntu forums: http://www.kubuntuforums.net/showthread ... post324366

It's pretty annoying so I hope it gets fixed soon...

As a workaround, I would suggest disabling the "automatically set date & time" setting in System Settings, and configuring "ntpd" manually. In most cases, simply installing it should suffice, as the default settings are usually sufficient.

It is imperative however that the system timezone is set appropriately in this case however. (ie. when logged in at a virtual terminal, the "date" command should reflect your timezone).

OK. Before installing ntpd, I did something simpler. Logged in to Gnome. Did the date and time setting there including the correct timezone. Switched back to KDEand found things in order. Here is the output of date command now:
Sat Jun 15 19:36:24 IST 2013
This is how it looked when things were messed up:
Fri, 14 Jun 2013 13:01:48 +0000
Note - No IST!

On a side note, why should it be so difficult to (a) select a time-zone, (b) decide if you want to use network-updated time OR enter time manually and be done??

I am not a 'techie' but my plain, simple, ordinary mobile phone has been doing it for ages now! :)

It is not a complicated procedure as such, however the code in question is quite old from what I understand, and has broken in numerous ways over time. I'm not sure of the maintenance status of the code either - it could be unmaintained.
