That is the error message I get when I try to Save As or load from Kate, Kwrite or when I open Dolphin. I don't know where
in the file system kio_file is supposed to be or what it is supposed to look like, nor which package I need to download and install
to restore it.

This means I can write and save in one open file, I cannot use other tools where files are loaded dependent on the same
process. I can still use Midnite Commander because it works at a lower level.

Hope someone can help me soon,

No I had it running since May, and though I had other problems
I was really surprised when the kio_file problem started showing
up the other day.

2) which distro ?
PCLinux OS 2013.4 KDE

3) version of KDE ?
4.10.1

4) did it ever work correctly? if so recent upgrade ?
Yes it worked correctly and PCLOS is a rolling release and this is the most recent,
the 1st 64 bit version for the distribution afaik.
Lots of updates coming thru frequently.

local

try running kbuildsycoca4 --noincremental 2> /dev/null

That I will keep in mind if it recurs.

Well since I had no replies I started attempting re-install about 13:00 local time
and finally got it working about 18:30. Had to shut down my extra partitions first
and format the /home in order to get everything I needed. After I booted up and
saw that everything was ticking over properly I remounted those extra partitions and
rebooted.

Thanks for your input.
