Search & Launch layout: what to do with contacts

Hi,
I like Search & launch, but something bugs me: when search results are contacts (vcards), the default behavior seems to be to open the vcard in a text editor.

I would rather expect to open kaddressbook with clicked contact selected (I tried to associate vcards with kaddressbook, but it doesn't launch this way), or to open a kmail window with a mail to clicked contact.

Is there anyway to make contacts appearing in search results more useful?

Thanks,

Hmm, this should not happen, however it does appear that my system is similar - VCard files are not associated with KAddressBook.
Do you have the "Contacts" runner enabled in this case, or are the results in this case proper contact results - which are being incorrectly opened?

I don't know what you mean about the "contacts" runner.
Here is the kind of results I get searching for "David".

These items are apparently vcards, but I don't know what to do with them.

Hm, those look like normal Nepomuk search results (as used for files, etc) rather than Contact results (which should have a mail icon).
Can you open KRunner (Alt + F2) and check to see if "Contacts" is enabled in it's settings? Also, check to see if a similar query works in KRunner properly.

I installed the krunner addon for contacts, but I get no results from it.

In System Settings > Desktop Search, is the Email indexer enabled?

Yes.

I tried with contacts as different ressources :
vcard folder, local LDAP

They appear in kaddressbook, but not as search results by krunner (contacts runner enabled), and at the root of "search and launch", in the contacts category, I get nothing.

Okay, please report a bug against the contacts runner - it appears that it is not functioning properly here.

Well, I searched in kde bugs reports, there are several 3 year old reports about this :-\

Unfortunate. Do you have any links to these bug reports?

Okay, I can think of one workaround to this, but it would require a script/application which understands the *.vcf format.

One could then use it to start KMail, sending an email to the person in question. Unfortunately KAddressBook has no arguments to open a specified contact, so that is going to be of little help unfortunately.

This is one of the most annoying KDE bugs - it means that there actually is no way to search for a contact in KDE except open the addressbook application and search manually. It's very basic functionality that I believe all other major desktops have (gnome, unity, os x, even win 8).

I'd fix it myself if I knew how - but as I don't, does anyone know of who we can refer this issue to?

This is something which would probably need to be fixed by the Plasma Desktop developers I suspect.
