weird font behaviour on mouse-over

Thu Jul 11, 2013 6:07 am
Hi.

KDE 4.10.3 (first saw while on KDE 4.8.x)
FreeBSD 10.0 (same thing while on FreeBSD 9.0-9.1)

I have a funny efefct that I want to get rid of. When I move mouse over shortcuts in the KDE panels (for example in System Settings) - I have a funny effect of "shrinking text" - looks like the hinting is changing, so text uses less space, while the size of it remains the same. When I move mouse back from shortcut - it changes back.

I did a small video that demonstrates this:

http://zhegan.in/files/kde.ogv

Can I get rid of this ? Thanks.

Hmm. Does this occur under a new user (ie. with default font settings)?

Nope.

Thanks a lot. Cleared an old .fontconfig file and the funny effect disappeared.

Okay, I stepped once again on this, and this time I decided to investigate a bit.
I found that this is "hintfull" mode hinting is responsible of this. When switched back to "hintmedium" or whatever, the effect is gone, only that fonts are rendered better in my environment with a "hintfull" hinting.

Is there anything I can do about this funny effect, while leaving hintfull intact ?
Thanks.

Could you narrow down the places where the unusual font behaviour occurs, so we can determine if it could be the fault of custom KDE tooltip handling?

I recorded another video (3.4 Mb): http://zhegan.in/files/kde-font-shrinking.mkv

It still happens in System Settings (so I did not retake this part - same behavior).
It doesn't happen in Dolphin (I supposed it would, because Dolphin has same blue hover canvas around files and directories).
It happens in the main KDE menu, but not that hard: it doesn't happens when blue hover element is switching between two adjacent menu elements, but the effect can be triggered by moving the cursor off some border, for example moving it over a separator or moving it off the element grid.
It doesn't happen in some "generic" Qt application, for example in this video this is cantata.

Oh, almost forgot: it also happens in Chrome's "save as" dialog, which is weird, because from my point of view this is Dolphin also:

http://zhegan.in/files/chrome-save-as-effect.mkv (840 Kb)

P.S. I still have a FreeBSD 10.0, but KDE is now 4.10.5.

Thanks.

Thanks, I'm pretty happy with my font rendering and a I don't need a bunch of uncommited amateur patches.
I'm unhappy with visual effects, which is the issue of either KDE or of a FreeBSD and KDE combination.

Then learn how to control a hinter.
