Hi,

Few days ago my KDE stopped to work properly - when I press Menu button I have to wait about one minute before it appears. It's the same when I want to maximize/minimize application from a taskbar, I choose a window and it goes foreground only after couple of dozen seconds. Actually some other things don't work also - Icedove doesn't start at all, the process is <defunct>. There is no sound when I try to play something from Chrome or from a command line. I tried removing ~/.kde directory but it didn't help. The computer had few shutdowns due to power outages, but I'm not sure if it stopped to work after such a shutdown. I checked the file system and it is clean.

There are many messages in ~/.xsession-errors but those are suspicious (they appear many times):

QDBusConnection: session D-Bus connection created before QCoreApplication. Application may misbehave.
and
kwin(4297)/kdeui (KNotification) KNotification::slotReceivedIdError: Error while contacting notify daemon "Did not receive a reply. Possible causes include: the remote application did not send a reply, the message bus security policy blocked the reply, the reply timeout expired, or the network connection was broken."

What else should I check?

I've solved the problem. For some reason there is a log file libpeerconnection.log on the autostart list (System Settings -> Starting & Closing -> Autostart (translating)) and KDE wants to open that file with kwrite. This file is created by Chrome that also starts automatically. There is some concurrency probably and kwrite hangs blocking all other applications... When I kill kwrite process everything goes back to normal. I don't know why that file is in the autostart, maybe system restarted when I had it open or something.

A file can be automatically opened if it is located in ~/.config/autostart or ~/.kde4/Autostart. It can be either a symlink or the direct presence of the file - in any case, removing it should solve the problem permanently (unless the file is restored of course).

Right, I added symlinks to ~/.kde/Autostart directory some time ago to automatically start Chrome and other applications, but now Chrome keeps on creating that log file. I am not saying that this is good but it shouldn't kill KDE

Yes, unfortunately there is a little bug in the autostart system where it waits for applications to finish starting - and those applications which don't fork break the way this works unfortunately.

The correct logs to check in this case are ~/.xsession-errors and /var/log/Xorg.0.log

The fact that pressing Alt + Shift + F12 causes this problem to go away definitely indicates that this is caused by Desktop Effects. Which Effects do you have enabled in System Settings > Desktop Effects?

you could try process of elimination, remove apps until it longer freezes, I would focus on non-KDE apps as those would most likely not play nice.

I have latest ubuntu with KDE5 and nvidia binary drivers (346.59).
The problem is, taskbar is constantly freezing (I cannot click anything) and it reacts after a few minutes. So if I click app in task switcher, nothing happens (I also cannot open K menu). I use ALT-tab to switch apps and after a few minutes click is "registered" (with a few minutes delay) and it switches window.
It is really annoying, is there a solution to this?
