Hi,
With desktop effects on google earth is not drawing images properly. With desktop effects off everything is working fine. Is there any way to make both working.

Google Earth is a 3D ( OpenGL ) application, and so is KWin ( with Desktop Effects enabled ). It seems like 3D applications such as KWin, Compiz, games, Google Earth do not like sharing the graphics card. unfortunately not much can be done about it now until things are changed by the Xorg developers, but you could look at the steps documented in this thread: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=176636

Yeah, this is a driver thing and we can't fix it until DRI2 is implemented in X. nVidia works fine though with multiple OpenGL apps.

OK so everything is in the hands of Xorg developers. I hope they will do something about it because this I feel should be one of the features which should be supported by a good graphics system. If users cannot run multiple graphics applications together its a bad impression

As a temporary workaround it might be possible to deactivate desktop effects when using an OpenGL application and/or user XRender for desktop effects rather than OpenGL.

That would be a good feature for KWin. In particular it would allow the 3D Graphics to be fully devoted to the running game or other 3D application, giving a greater performance even if the graphics could be shared.

I think I read about a keyboard shortcut for deactivating compositing somewhere, but I can't remember where :(
