Debian Jessie - KDE 4.10.5.
One of the user accounts on my computer has started freezing during login (the other 3 are unaffected). Until 2 days ago my son's login was working fine, but now whenever he tries to log in, the 'blurred out' icons start to appear, the login sound plays and then the login appears just freeze. If I have logged in first myself and then done a 'switch user' to login as my son, I can still press Ctrl+Alt+7 to switch back to my login and carry on using the computer, but my son's login is still frozen at the same point. I've compared the ~/.xsession-errors files from both our logins and cannot see any clear reasons why one is working and the other is not. After posting in the IRC #kde channel, I've tried removing the 'plasma-scriptengine-python' package, as well as renaming the ~/.kde directory to ~/.kde.old. Neither of these has helped. I've also tried using 'kuser' to create a new, replacement login, but that new account just gives me an 'unable to complete login' error and kicks me back out again. Is anyone able to offer any advice about how I can even start to figure out where the login is failing (or even how to reset the account settings back to 'factory default', so we can get going again - there are almost no user preferences set on that account that really need keeping). |

maybe there's a bad app autostarting, try renaming ~/.config/autostart

Can you use System Activity (accessible through KRunner) to determine at what phase of startup the broken account is at?

Thanks for the suggestions - renaming .config/autostart hasn't made any difference.
User creation was successful, in that a new user was created (with a password), but when I attempted to log in as that new user, I got the following message: 'On no! Something has gone wrong. A problem has occurred and the system can't recover. Please log out and try again.' (with just a button to click to log out, and no other interaction possible). I've pasted a list of the running activities for the user in question, in ascending order of PID. I'm not sure how to translate that into figuring out what is causing the problem: startkde ssh-agent gpg-agent dbus-launch dbus-daemon start_kdeinit kdeinit4: klauncher kded4 bluedevil-helper obex-data-server bluedevil-monolithic kglobalaccel kwalletd kactiviymanagerd kwrapper4 ksmserver kwin knotify4 plasma-desktop ksysguardd kuiserver akonadi_control akonadiserver mysqld nepomukserver nepomukservicestub polkit-kde-authentication-agent-1 pulseaudio krunner korgac tracker-store tracker-miner-fs nepomukcontroller gvfsd klipper kmix gvfs-udisks2-volume-monitor gvfs-afc-volume-monitor gvfs-gphoto2-volume-monitor gvfs-goa-volume-monitor gvfs-mtp-volume-monitor akonadi_agent_launcher akonadi_agent_launcher akonadi_agent_launcher akonadi_archivemail_agent akonadi_agent_launcher akonadi_agent_launcher akonadi_agent_launcher akonadi_agent_launcher akonadi_agent_launcher akonadi_agent_launcher akonadi_agent_launcher akonadi_agent_launcher akonadi_maildispatcher_agent akonadi_mailfilter_agent akonadi_nepomuk_feeder akonadi_agent_launcher virtuoso-t nepomukservicestub nepomukservicestub Does that help at all? |

As a follow-up, I've also looked in the .xsession-errors file for the new user account I created, and this was the result (does any of this shed any light on what might be going wrong with that):

I've never seen that "Oh no ..." error message, it appears to be Gnome generated and most of your .xsession-errors are also Gnome ones. The Gnome-shell.desktop msg is really strange, at least to me.
Does anyone use Gnome on that pc? |

Thanks google01103,
That error at least turned out to be simple to solve - being a Debian system, the default for new users is a Gnome login (which is obviously very broken, I haven't used it in a long time). I switched the new user over to logging in via KDE and they are now freezing in the same way that my son's login is doing. So one issue solved, but still no closer to solving my initial problem ... |

can you post the ~/xsession-errors file on the new account after logging into KDE fresh and don't include anything previous to the tracker-miner-fs errors
note: when posting large amounts of text please use the code tags available in preview mode |

Deleted the old .xsession-errors and started a new login, with the fresh account (and used the 'code' button this time - thanks for pointing it out to me):

can you post a list of running process for the new user
what happens if you set the new user to be pasword-less? systemsettings -> login screen -> convenience -> check enable password-less logins -> check the new user -> apply (root password should be requested) |

It's been a long time since I've had a spare evening to have another go at this.
By a (very long-winded) process of elimination, I managed to narrow the problem down first to .kde/share/config, then to kwinrc and then to the line:
If I delete that one line (the backend one) from the file, then the login freezes during the startup animation (after typing username + password). If I delete the whole file, then a new file is created without that line and the login process freezes. Now, my next questions are:

glxinfo produces:
Redoing with export LIBGL_DEBUG=verbose gives:
A bit of searching the internet has found lots of forums where this error is mentioned in relation to Steam and Nvidia drivers, but I'm not running steam (it's installed, but not used very often) and I have an ATI graphics card. |

maybe it's a permission issue if only one user has this problem http://phoronix.com/forums/showthread.p ... -13-8-Beta
if you open kuser -> groups -> video, are all the users in this group? if not add the missing one |
