Nvidia driver 331.67 breaks KDE ?

Fri Apr 18, 2014 3:00 pm
Hi there,

I just installed the binary driver 331.67 from Nvidia.

I use KDE 4.11.5 and Linux kernel 3.14.1.

When I now log into a KDE session I have no window borders, KWIN seems to be disabled, the desktop effect seem to be disabled too. And, I cannot use my USB keyboard to do anything, I cannot type anything. I just can use the mouse to escape that KDE session.

Is anyone aware of these symptoms? I have to use the beta driver 337.12, this driver is okay.

I would like to avoid using beta drivers, but I have to, 337.12 is the only one that works. Since I use kernel 3.14 I cannot use any driver below 331.67.

Does anyone have some clue about this issue? I mean, I can live with the beta driver, I am just curious, what the developer may say about this...

Thank you.

Do you get a Dr.Konqui crash dialog?
Does "glxinfo" work (you can try from VT1, "DISPLAY=:0 glxinfo") or crash?

Yes, brand new user, same problem, no KWIN, no keyboard. I think it is just a matter of time until others experience this issue. At least, the beta driver works!

No, no Konqui crash. KDE log in starts fine. Just when you start an app, I get no KWIN, no boarders, no keyboard, cannot move windows.

And I just see I cannot start certain apps, for example I was not able to start Thunderbird, I could only start KDE apps.

Yes, glxinfo works, I started it with a script from ~/.kde4/Autostart because I cannot type with that driver.

Problem identified:

NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-331.67.run does not contain /usr/lib64/libEGL.so ! It only contains 32 bit libEGL.so. To get 64 bit libEGL.so driver 337.12 is needed. Thus, not a bug, but feature. Driver branch 331 does not support 64 bit EGL.
