I use alt+f1 to bring up the application launcher, but after I upgraded to Kubuntu 14.04 which shipping with KDE 4.13, alt+f1 is not working anymore.

System Settings -> Shortcuts and Gestures -> Global Keyboard Shortcuts -> KDE component -> Plasma Desktop Shell -> Activate Application Launcher Widget is set to Alt+F1

Any tip to what shall I look for to make it work again?

If you right click on the widget in the panel > Application Launcher Settings > Keyboard Shortcut, and set it to Alt + F1 there, does it work?

I tried to do that, but I got a warning that the shortcut is already in use so I didn't proceed.

I can try later today (not in front of this computer at the moment) and report back.

Thanks for the reply :)

Okay - if you strike that warning simply override it.

It works if I set it by right clicking on the widget.

Thanks!

However, I am still curious to find out why it is not working otherwise :/

I'm afraid i'm not sure why it doesn't work through the other method - possibly it is broken upstream, or it could be a configuration issue caused by upgrades.

Most probably a configuration issue caused by the upgrade, because I upgraded another laptop and alt+f1 works.

Thanks for you support anyway :)

I had this problem but it resolved itself after updates.

more info such as which version of Kubuntu and what window manager, updates etc have been applied would be very helpful.
Code: Select all
sudo service tty1 restart

if [CTRL]+[Alt]+[F1] doesn't get you a tty after that (or perhaps even if it does) please post response from:
Code: Select all
ps aux | grep tty

As an alternative, if you've another PC/Laptop on the same LAN as the machine in question and you are desperate for a terminal that won't crash if gdm (or kde or whatever) is stopped or restarted then you can SSH in and get things done - say so if you want to pursue (or checkout) this method and don't know how.

This question is about a different issue. Alt+F1 should bring up the application launcher and not change to the terminal.

Ctrl+Alt+F1 (or F2-F7) is used to change to the terminal when you are logged into the desktop environment (KDE in our case).
