G'day folks

Just wondering how to get the appropriate KDE for the new Ubuntu 14.04? There only seems to be an educational kubuntu desktop listed in Ubuntu software centre, but this "is not available from the current sources". There is a Kubuntu Restricted extras package available.

I have just upgraded from Ubuntu 13.10 to 14.04 (fresh install). I had downloaded kubuntu repositories and desktop (4.12 I think) via instructions found on the web, and this seemed to work OK with Ubuntu 13.10. Just wondering if I use the same info and procedure for Ubuntu 14.04, or is there a later kde better suited to 14.04? I see there is a complete Kubuntu 14.04 download available, but I can't see any reference to just the desktop on the official site. Is there no appropriate kde for Ubuntu 14.04 as yet?

Many thanks

First of all, you should check for information on the (k)ubuntu docs and forums as the question you ask is distro-specific, having little to do with KDE itself. The advice you get here will be less likely to be accurate/relevant than the advice you get there.
That said, I may be able to point you in directions that may be of assistance.
As far as I know (I use (k)ubuntu at work, currently using 12.04) you should be able to just install the kubuntu-desktop metapackage and get everything (should be in the base ubuntu repositories). Kubuntu also has a backports repository that provides up-to-date versions of KDE to supported versions of Kubuntu (which is probably what you were using in your ubuntu 13.10 install), but that shouldn't be necessary (until later KDE releases if you desire to keep up with KDE) since the kde/kubuntu desktop and associated packages should already be in the base ubuntu repos.

Doing some checking in software center, it seems to want to hide (and/or bury) the metapackages for installing kde, but you should be able to search for "kubuntu-desktop" and it will show up, or you can just use the command-line tools to install them, using: "sudo apt-get install kubuntu-desktop".

Thanks airdrik; much appreciated.

I was wanting to use whatever the latest stable kubuntu desktop release is. If this is what would be available via the kubuntu backport repository I used in January, I will go with that unless a more updated repository "address" is available. I see there is a KDE version 4.13, but not sure if this is only Beta, or if it would be appropriate for Ubuntu 14.04. I will also check the distro specific pages as suggested.

Searching "Kubuntu-desktop" in the Ubuntu software centre with the standard repositories coming with the Ubuntu 14.04 new install shows "Kubuntu Plasma Desktop/Netbook system". However, it says it "depends on all the packages in the Kubuntu desktop system." Not sure if this is the package to start with in getting KDE on my new system? Do I need something else first?

Cheers

the "kubuntu-desktop" package is a meta-package, meaning that it represents a collection of packages which together provide the whole desktop (officially, KDE's desktop is called Plasma Desktop, and the associated software is KDE Software Compilation; calling it "Kubuntu Plasma Desktop/Netbook system" implies that Kubuntu is bundling the Plasma Desktop, KDE Software Compilation and some branding or other kubuntu-specific items together); so installing that will pull in all of the other packages (Ubuntu software center (and most other package managers) will pull in dependencies automatically when you install a given package). There are also meta-packages available for kde and kde-base which provide a trimmed-down set of packages (see this page on MetaPackages for more information).

A quick check on distrowatch shows that (k)ubuntu 14.04 (base repositories) currently provides KDE 4.13 (official stable release), so you don't need to add the kubuntu backports repository until after the next KDE release (4.14, expected to be released in November), or until they stop pushing the monthly updates (4.13.1, 4.13.2, etc.) to the base repositories.
