Hi, I'm using a computer with Windows and KDE. When I use it on KDE, the temperature rises until the computer turns off automatically. That doesn't happen when I'm on Windows. Is there something that needs to be set on KDE to reduce the temperature?
Thanks, maxatl |

Hi,
no, this is not a KDE issue as such but more distro specific. Which one do you use and have you checked with them (forum, wiki, etc.) how to keep temperature down? Interesting would be top output and whether the fan is running at all.

what temp are you seeing that initiates shutdown?
if you have the senors package installed and configured you can call it and see what the fan rpms are, and if they increase as the temp rises or not is this a new install or a new issue? do you have a diff desktop environment (Gnome, xfce, etc) installed if so does it also cause overheating? you should probably post your hw (cpu and motherboard) and the distro and kernel version |

this is not KDE issue, check your hardware. You can install something like the Core Temp CPU monitor. Check your laptop's manual for safe temperature limits, subtract about 10° C, then plug that value into Core Temp under Options > Overheat Protection. You can set your computer to give you a popup message or go to sleep if it ever reaches unsafe temperatures. If it doesn't ever notify you, it probably isn't overheating, and your problem is merely a matter of comfort.

2. Keep It Out of Hot Weather 3. Use a Lap Desk 4. Control Your Fan Speeds 5. Keep an Eye on Intense Processes

There might be an issue in some KDE thing which uses lots of CPU; check the task manager for a first starting point to find out what. The overheating and shutdown itself are not a KDE issue, but rather a problem with your hardware -- that must not happen, no matter how much CPU $software uses.
Greetings!
I'm working on the KDevelop IDE.
