Slow KDE3 apps in KDE4

Sun Nov 09, 2008 8:55 am
Hi!
Yesterday, after updating to KDE 4.1.3 ("release 52.2") the interaction (loading) between any KDE3 apps under KDE4 is very slow.
My problem is especially Amarok and KMess. It takes about 40-50sec to start. :undecided:
What is the problem? Can I speed up the loading?
Thanks

Did you use KDE 4.1.x before that? And the programs launched at approximately the same speed as they did in 3.x?

As far as Kmess goes, I would recommend upgrading it to the KDE4 version. I'm not sure if it is considered beta yet or not, but I've run it for months and it is rock-stable. You may want to hold off upgrading to Amarok2 for a while longer though...

Yeah, you are right, I know about KDE4 version of KMess (It has problems with importing custom animations/emotions), but I don't want to use Amarok 2 while they not implement the Queue manager.
Launching a KDE4 program in KDE3 is also very slow (Krusader example). My KSysGuard says, that while Krusader is starting, the system also launches the kded4, kdeinit4 processes - and it takes veeery long.
Before this KDE version, this process was really fast (Krusader's KDE4 version in KDE3 started approximately with the same speed as in KDE4).

It has? I haven't noticed that, but I don't use that feature much so maybe that's the reason. I'm using revision 3859 btw, so if that's later than yours it may be something that has been fixed relatively recently.

It's still kinda buggy anyway so a good idea that!

Very odd. KDE3 apps takes maybe 5 more seconds to launch here, but that's only the first time when there are no kde3-libs loaded. Otherwise they start as quickly as the KDE4 apps - and that's using KDE 4.1.3. Granted, I don't use all that many KDE3 programs anymore but the ones I do use start fast.

No, it isn't fixed in my version 2.0alpha2-svn ( >= 20081020). In the Settings, under Custom Emotions -> Add new Kmess still crashes. But I'm solved this problem:
You need manually to copy the emotion .pngs to their directories.
From ~/.kde/share/apps/kmess/customemoticons// to
.kde4/share/apps/kmess/customemoticons/ and .kde4/share/apps/kmess//customemoticons/ - here in the emotions.xml file you need to specify the patch and the hotkey to the emotion.
And now, it works! :)
