Hello everybody!

I need a help about the ibus input method. After installing some updates a few days ago, the ibus icon disappeared from the taskbar. I need it to switch among several input methods. I tried to set the input method either as "default" or "ibus", rebooting every time I changed it. The ibus packages seem to be all installed and the "show icon in the taskbar" option (or sth similar, I don't know exactly, since my system is in italian) in the ibus settings is checked, but nothing appears in the taskbar. I tried to re-install the packages im-config, ibus-gtk and ibus-gtk3 (I didn't dare to reinstall the main ibus package), but nothing changed.
I also tried to use the key shortcut I set to switch IM (<super> + space) to see if by any chance it was working anyway, but no...
One thing that might be important: some days ago I also created a xorg.conf file in /etc/X11 with the following content:

Code: Select all
Section "Device"
   Identifier  "Intel Graphics"
   Driver      "intel"
   Option      "AccelMethod" "sna"
   Option      "TearFree" "true"
EndSection

in order to solve a tearing problem of my Intel integrated graphic card (the Radeon one is not recognized at all by the OS). I just added the file in that position... is it correct? The tearing problem is solved, by the way.

My OS is Kubuntu 14.04 32bit, with kernel linux 3.13.0-39-generic and KDE Plasma workspace.
Any help or suggestion, please???

type qtconfig in konsole. A window will appear. take "Interface" tab in it. Look at the bottom to find a selection for Default Input Method. Most probably, xim will be there. Make it ibus from the drop down menu.

Hey Herman,

thanks for your answer. I did what you suggested. Actually, I had neither qtconfig nor ibus-qt4 installed (but I had ibus-gtk and ibus-gtk3). Anyway, I installed them (and uninstalled the gtk versions) and set ibus in qtconfig as default IM. Closed and restarted session: no changes :(

Are you looking for the kimpanel plasmoid?

Hello Luebking,

thank you very much for your tip, kimpanel plasmoid does work! Now I have the icon of the current IM and I can choose among the IMs I installed by clicking on it.
However, there are still 2 things i can't figure out:

1) How to make the <super>space keyboard shortcut work, so I can switch rapidly among the IMs without clicking on the taskbar icon. I tried to set it either in ibus setting windows or in Kimpanel settings window, without success. I also tried other key combinations.
2) How to use my western standard keyboard layout when I write in arabic (kbd - m17n). In the Ibus settings window > Advanced tab I checked "Use system keyboard layout": actually it works with anthy, pinyin and hangeul, but not with kbd-m17n.

Any idea?

I've no personal experience on IM, sorry :-(
Maybe someone else can answer your questions.
