Weird Desktop When I Boot 'Sometimes'

Fri Jan 09, 2015 10:43 am
Hi. I have a problem which shows up intermittently when I boot Mageia Linux and the KDE desktop appears. Every so often the desktop will load without the desktop icons and I'll have this thin bar on the right hand side. What is happening and how do I stop it?

Mageia 4 Linux with KDE 4.12.5

Yes I have the bottom panel when this happens because I can usually log out and back in again and that usually clears up the problem. The problem is more of a nuisance which can be cleared up with one or more logging out and back in again.

not a solution but instead of re-logging back in try just restarting plasma, using alt+F2
Code: Select all
 kquitapp plasma-desktop && plasma-desktop

Sounds like this bug, which should be fixed in 4.14.2:
https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=294795

So try upgrading KDE, but I cannot tell you how to do that on your distribution...

PS: you could also file a bug report with your distribution (pointing to the KDE bug report) and ask them to backport the fix to their KDE packages.

alt+F2, OK I'll give that a try the next time it happens and post back if it solves this nuisance.

just to be sure its running the command using alt+F2, not just alt+F2 as that just opens krunner

I have exactly the same problem, using the Plasma desktop on Kubuntu 14.04. I have tried various solutions, so far non have worked. Nor am I able to replicate the error, it seems to happen at random and the only sollution is to shut down and restart the computer. I'd appreciate if anyone else has had this happen and found the answer, its very annoying to say the least. I have two computers both running the same system the fault only happens on one of them.

AFAICS Kubuntu 14.04 comes with KDE 4.13, so you probably have to add some PPA.
