KDE desktop freezes with every Nvidia post 334.21 drivers. I tried the lastest drivers and it happened after a days of use. I had to reboot and after that it freeze after a few seconds. I had to go back to 331 drivers.

Some other people have this issue and report it on Nvidia forum but nothing :
https://devtalk.nvidia.com/default/topi ... =9#4452302

Is there a bug on Nvidia drivers or somewhere in KDE ?

Thank you.

mine don't and I'm running 343.36

you should post your card and what versions of distro and KDE

are you sure that Nvidia bug is yours, it talks about when resizing a window

I have a Nvidia GT430. I use Netrunner 14.1 x64 (Kubuntu derivative) with KDE 4.14.2.
I don't know if it's the same bug but I can confirm that since 334.21 drivers I have freezes. With 331 drivers from official repo no freeze at all.

I also have a 430 (self compiled drivers) and don't experience crashes

did you have crashes prior to Netrunner 14.1?

does it crash if you turn off compositing?

I don't remember having freezes before I switched to KDE (Netrunner 14) some time ago.
I didn't tried without compositing. I reinstall the drivers 346.35 and I will keep you informed as it can take some time to freeze.

Please paste the output of
Code: Select all
qdbus org.kde.KWin /KWin supportInformation
somewhere.
It will be required to have the compositor up, but not to cause the freeze (obviously ;-)

I installed drivers 346.35 from edgers ppa to see if there is a difference compared to mamarley ppa.

Here is the output of "qdbus org.kde.KWin /KWin supportInformation" :

In case you encounter freezes with that driver as well:

Painting blocks for vertical retrace: yes

Do you have
Code: Select all
tr '\0' '\n' < /proc/`pidof kwin`/environ | grep -i yield

__GL_YIELD=USLEEP

In case:
glPreferBufferSwap: 99

Set "tearing prevention" to "none". The driver should support buffer age, but if the buffer runs out of history, it will perform a read from the front buffer to base the backbuffer (what would match the problem w/ glReadPixels mentioned on the nvidia page)

It's in the last tab of this dialog:
Code: Select all
kcmshell4 kwincompositing

Current Plugin: kwin3_aurorae

Try oxygen. Just given the issues w/ QtQuick on another GL context we encountered in KDE5 (might be similar problems w/ QML so far unnoticed)

OK I test the 346.35 x64 drivers from edgers ppa for a week and no freeze.
So I think there is a problem with mamarley ppa.

you should contact the mamarley packager regarding your experiences

You use a non-standard ppa for Nvidia because ?

Have you considered compiling your own drivers? It's not difficult if the required packages are installed

I did it ;)

I just wanted to try the latest Nvidia drivers. 331 vs 346

I prefer not do that, something can break and I don't think it worth the effort.

I think I speaked too fast. Today I had a freeze with Nvidia drivers 346.65 from edgers ppa.

I don't know if it's a problem with the drivers or ppa or kde...

Maybe it's because I installed hardware enablement stack yesterday, I don't know... But I will stick to official drivers ;)
