How to select distinct files in an archive opened in Ark, assuming "single click to open files and folders" option checked in System Settings?

Doesn't work - clicked file is opened anyway. |

I'm also not seeing this working as one would expect
Dolphin offers an alternative - is "open archive as folder" in Configure Dolphin -> Navigation, set? does it work? |

Hold down the left mouse button and then move the mouse before you release it. This way you can select files (only one or even multiple) without opening them. Or press the _right_ mouse button and dismiss the context menu without choosing an action. |

the first option only works if you select contiguous files which is not necessarily the most common need |

No, it also works for single files. Just move the mouse horizontally... ![]() You only need to move it a certain distance (a few pixels). |

no, the op was for "distinct" files and to me that would imply the ability to select discontinuous files |

Works as expected here.

Well, then hold the Ctrl key to add files to the selection. But to _select_ (and not open) a file, move the mouse a few pixels while holding the mouse button. Sorry, I forgot to mention: do _not_ click on the file name, but on some other detail (size e.g.). Otherwise you will drag the file when moving the mouse. |

Ark is not part of "KDE Workspace". It is part of "KDE Utils".

That we are even having this conversation shows that there's an issue - the method should be the same as with any other app ps - I can't get it to select 2 or more and then extract them (I can highlight a second but only one extracts) |

I never said that there is no issue. I'm just trying to explain how it is possible to select single/multiple files without opening them.
How are you trying to extract them? It works fine here when I select 2 or more files and click on the "Extract" button. And it works fine when I right-click on them and choose "Extract". Dragging only drags the one file you click at though, not all selected ones. |

Point was that I'm still using the old stuff. But here my ark version for completeness' sake.
And if I select two distinct files using CTRL + left click (and yes, I can click directly on the files themselves) they both get extracted to where I tell them two. Same behaviour as wolfi323. What version(s) are you having trouble with?

ok finally got it to work, the single file extract was when one of the files was lightly highlighted, not fully highlighted
