Grey border around desktop icon widget

Hello, in plasma 4 I used the desktop icon widget a lot, and liked that there was no border around the icons, as it meant I could make them fit into whatever background I was using (make a circular steam icon fit into the Pyro's hadoken, for example).
It seems like there's no option to disable the rather large grey border around the desktop icon. Is there a way I can disable it in a config file somewhere, or do you think one day there could be a tick box to make it transparent?
Thanks a lot.

Hmm..
On my work computer (kde 4) and on my home computer (kde 5), application/shortcut icons on the desktop have no border.

Can you provide more details about KDE version, desktop theme used (and what changes if you switch to different themes), what kind of desktop icon it is (when you right-click on it, what exactly is the entry to configure it called). A screenshot will be helpful here.
