Hello everyone,
I'm trying to get KDE work on my new laptop. startx command seems to work fine (displays xterm), but when I run /etc/init.d/xdm start all I get is a black screen. Kdm is complaining about no DBUS session-bus found (among other things) even though /etc/init.d/dbus status gives status: started. I'm not sure what is wrong... Thank you for any help /var/log/kdm.log:
installed kde packages (eix -IcC kde-)

That's the system dbus, but kdm complains about missing session dbus.
Do you have a running X server ("ps ax | grep X") when starting xdm/kdm? If not, check /var/log/Xorg.0.log It probably crashed (for some reason which is hopefully listed there) |

Thanks for reply. Tried to look into it, but not sure I found anything helpful. Output of: ps ax | grep x
Difference of Xorg.0.log-s of normally running X after runnging startx marked < and after running /etc/init.d/xdm start (marked with >):
complete /var/log/Xorg.0.log after starting kmd:

Seems you encounter
https://devtalk.nvidia.com/default/topi ... -on-linux/ Short answer: disable the intel IGP in BIOS (if possible) or install & use bumblebee. The xrandr calls mentioned in the nvidia link *may* work, afair kdm had the relevant include in /etc/kde4/kdm/Xsetup (ie. add them there) |

Thanks for reply, yeah I know about these xrandr commands -- given that the x server started via startx seems working fine I thought that the problem was somewhere else, thats why I didn't mentioned earlier. May I just ask one more question (I'm sorry if this is stupid one)? How come that startx works fine, but starting via kdm is broken? |
