Hi,

i have on my computer KUbuntu 15.04.
It was based on KDE 5.2.2, Qt Version5.4.1 and Framework v5.9

I followed the steps from http://www.ubuntumaniac.com/2015/07/plasma-532-released-install-on-kubuntu.html that are the same as on http://www.tecmint.com/install-kde-plasma-5-in-linux/ to upgrade plasma to v5.3

Once done i discovered that "about system" in "system settings" app was not anymore available.

How can i check what is the plasma and kde version installed now ?

thx

in fact in terminal i can type:
kde4-config -v
Code: Select all
Qt: 4.8.6
KDE Development Platform: 4.14.8
kde4-config: 1.0

type:
konsole -v
Code: Select all
QCoreApplication::arguments: Please instantiate the QApplication object first
Qt: 5.4.1
KDE Frameworks: 5.12.0
Konsole: 15.04.0

and type:
kf5-config -v
Code: Select all
Qt: 5.4.1
KDE Frameworks: 5.12.0
kf5-config: 1.0

but plasmashell -v returns "unknown option" :(

Ok so i discovered 2 bugs:

1. "-v" option does not exist anymore in new plasma 5.3.2
to know the KDE/Plasma version, you have to type: kcmshell5 about-distro and it displays the classical "system setting" window.

2. previously in plasma 5.2.2 i could get KDE/Qt, Framework version etc... going in "System settings > Personalization > About system"
in Plasma 5.3.2 this does not exist anymore (it is hidden...why??)
However you can access to it using "kcmshell5 about-distro" in terminal

those kind of things should be fixed.

HTH

Have fun
Alain

5.3.2 is not "new". The current version is 5.4.1, with 5.4.2 being released next week.

What does "plasmashell --help" say?
Here with 5.4.1:
Code: Select all
Usage: plasmashell [options]

Options:
  -h, --help                   Displays this help.
  -v, --version                Displays version information.
-d, --qmljsdebugger          Enable QML Javascript debugger
-w, --windowed               Force a windowed view for testing purposes
-n, --no-respawn             Do not restart plasma-shell automatically after
                               a crash
-c, --crashes <n>            Recent number of crashes
  -s, --shut-up                Deprecated, does nothing
-p, --shell-plugin <plugin>  Force loading the given shell plugin
-a, --standalone             Load plasmashell as a standalone application,
needs the shell-plugin option to be specified

But the -v option apparently didn't exist *yet* in 5.3.2.

Btw, the "About System" module gets the version number from the file /usr/share/xsessions/plasma.desktop... ;)

2. previously in plasma 5.2.2 i could get KDE/Qt, Framework version etc... going in "System settings > Personalization > About system"
in Plasma 5.3.2 this does not exist anymore (it is hidden...why??)

Because it is part of kinfocenter now.
It is no *settings* module anyway.

I think the feature request is valid. We shouldn't expect that an average user wants to use the terminal and knows about plasmashell (the OS is still called KDE, the desktop maybe plasma but plasmashell supposes expertise). Dolphin, for instance, has no main menu by default, and access to the about dialog is located deep in the hierarchy. And finally the about dialog neither shows the version info (which was there formerly, AFAIR) nor offers an easy way to copy those data.

Start any "standard" KDE program, such as Konsole or Kate and select Help - About KDE
