I have a problem where LDAP account logins stall 2-3 minutes before getting into the desktop. This only happens for LDAP accounts as local accounts can login without incident. I have tried rebooting, renaming ~/.kde4, even renaming an entire home directory to allow KDE to rebuild from scratch, all to no avail.

It seems you are using the NVidia driver without triple buffering
You must export __GL_YIELD="USLEEP" to prevent large CPU overhead on synced swaps
Preferably, enable the TripleBuffer Option in the xorg.conf Device

Not sure what that really means, but it definitely is "slower."
