Hi
Not sure if this is the right section of the forum.
I updated the nvidia drivers today and after that something is wrong with how the windows are displayed. I cant close any open windows using 'X' button as there is no any X button. Here goes the screenshot.

Does anyone know how can I fix this? I installed cinnamon and it works perfect. I really like kde but I don't want to do a fresh install.

KWin isn't running - you should have gotten some crash dialog, including a backtrace.
To get a usable system, eg. install and run openbox - this will allow you to move, close and minimize windows etc.

Then you'll have to check why "kwin" doesn't start (and it crashes beyond the compositor, which would have been deactivated first) - the key is in the "developer information" tab in the crash dialog.
Try to run "kwin --replace &", prepare to end up w/o any WM again and run "openbox &" once more to get you a managed desktop back.

A "popular" cause (if you installed the driver from nvidia rather than from your distro) is an un- or misresolved libGL symlink.
Try to run "glxinfo" to see whether that
a) crashes as well
b) indicates a usable nvidia GLX setup

Which also would only help you until you break the system again by repeating your actions.... :-P

Hi
Thanks for your time to reply.
After I did "kwin --replace &" I found out kde-window-manager is not installed. How could that happen - I don't know. Could it be uninstalled by mistake?
Anyway thanks for this, you saved my life man!

Hard to say (might have been uninstalled as depending on opengl?)
So everything's fine now again?

Yes everything is back to normal after:
Code: Select all
sudo apt-get install kde-window-manager

God knows what happened :)
