I recently upgraded from openSUSE 13.2 to openSUSE LEAP 42.1.
Since that upgrade, my settings (e.g. mouse behaviour, themes) are no longer used. I can change them with menu option systemsettings (they were as wanted), but they are not applied. Also, applications in use are not restarted in a new session and the links in the Desktop folder cannot be seen in the desktop. version: KDE Plasma 5.4.2 The configuration files are in .kde4 (I think, .kde4/share/config, the files here are recent). Any clues how to fix this? |

The configuration files should be in ~/.config

Thank you.
I checked and in ~/.config there are configuration files, just as in ~/.kde4/share/config. When I change a setting in KDE system settings, the file kwinrc is changed in ~/kde4/share/config, but not in ~/.config. So it looks like my old settings (from before the update) are still there and maintained by KDE system settings. I set the working directory to ~/.config in the menu item properties of KDE system settings and now my changes have effect. Logging off and on again shows the required settings, but an open Konsole is not restored in the new session and the items in ~/Desktop are still not available in the Desktop window. So, I'm going in the right direction, but haven't fixed all problems yet. Suggestions are still welcome. |

You do what? The config paths should not be configurable, KF5 (settings and applications) should operate on ~/.config and SC4 (settings and applications) on ~/.kde/share/config Anyway. Konsole will not restore because it's a Qt5 client. Session management was largely and at least itr still is broken, see https://bugreports.qt.io/browse/QTBUG-46310 for an entrance, I couldn't find the bug that prevents even restarting (together with all the patches that were provided, at least explicitly saved sessions should restore Qt5 clients) Is your desktop containment configured to "folder view" (to display the contents of ~/Desktop)? Does it show another folder instead? |

Thank you for your reaction.
>> I set the working directory to ~/.config in the menu item properties of KDE system settings >You do what? The KDE application menu (main menu), under settings, has 'system settings'. With the context menu (right mouse click) I choose 'edit application' and there it is possible (among other properties) to enter the working directory. It was empty and I changed that to ~/config. As a result, the settings in ~/config where read by system settings and I could change the settings to my preferences. ~/.kde/config is empty, ~/.kde4 is full with lots of directories and files. I did not change anything there directly. > Konsole will not restore because it's a Qt5 client. I will have to wait for a patch then. Or is there another terminal that does restore? I continually have 3 tabs op a terminal open as I do some software development and debugging. Also, for file handling, I prefer terminals instead of graphic applications like Dolphin. >Is your desktop containment configured to "folder view" (to display the contents of ~/Desktop)? Does it show another folder instead? What do you mean with that? There is no folder whatsoever to be seen on the desktop, just a nice looking light bulb a small 'tab' with 'III Desktop' on it. That tab can be moved, but moves back to the boundary of the desktop and cannot be enlarged, so if there was something in/on it, it is invisible and inaccessible. |

Do *not* do that. Rather use systemsettings5 instead of KDE4's systemsettings to change your configuration. If you want to get rid of KDE4's systemsettings altogether, uninstall kdebase4-workspace-addons. |

OK, I see.
As I simply updated, I also expected the menu items to be 'actual'. I renamed the menu item systemsettings to kde4 systemsettings (and cleared the working directory again) and added kde5 systemsettings to the menu. I don't experience a difference, but that doesn't mean there could have been problems with my previous workaround. Now only getting the Desktop folder in view on the desktop and I can get on as before. |

Konsole from KDE4, afaics yakuake still uses the KDE4 konsolepart. Maybe xterm works as well.
Click TIFKAC* and activate "Desktop Settings", you should get a settings dialog and on the first page under "Layout" select "Folder View" instead of "Desktop" * "The Item Formerly Known As Cashew" - the burger icon on the desktop ![]() |

>* "The Item Formerly Known As Cashew" - the burger icon on the desktop ![]() Can't find TIFKAC nor Cashew. But right-clicking the mouse on the desktop offers 'desktop settings'. The dialog (cation 'desktop settings plasma') that shows offers background image, mouse actions and tweaks. Under tweaks I can switch on/off the 'tab' I have on my desktop, I now see it is called the toolbox of the desktop. But I can't find any Layout, Folder View/Desktop indications... |

Do you have /usr/share/plasma/plasmoids/org.kde.desktopcontainment/contents/ui/FolderViewLayer.qml ?

Well, it is "actual", but apparently the menu hides duplicated entries. And as both systemsettings and systemsettings5 are named the same, this is what might have happened. Btw, which language are you using? We rename "System Settings" to "Configure Desktop" in openSUSE, but for some reason our translation team lost that again (it was properly translated in previous versions up to 13.1) and it is called "System Settings" in other languages... For english, we rename KDE4's systemsettings to "Configure KDE4 Applications" to exactly prevent this problem, but that patch is missing in Leap 42.1 (or rather the wrong one is being applied, causing the same problem again) due to a mistake, An update for that is in the works though.
I think just renaming KDE4's systemsettings should have made the other one appear again...
Hm, that works fine here. Can you try to run systemsettings5 in a Konsole to rule out a problem there?
That's unrelated to systemsettings (4/5) though. Probably the wrong Activity is started on login? Can you switch in the Activity Manager? The right-click menu should offer you an option "Activities", or you should find it in the toolbox icon in the upper left corner (TIFKAC/"The Icon Formerly Known As Cashew" as luebking wrote ![]() |

Yes, we ship the KDE4 based yakuake in Leap 42.1 using the KDE4 konsolepart. AFAIK, a KF5 based version is not released yet (although the git frameworks version works fine IME.. ![]() The konsole4-part package doesn't include the application itself though, as it would conflict with the KF5 based konsole. |

Yes, I have. > Btw, which language are you using? Dutch, the menu item says 'systeeminstellingen'. > The right-click menu should offer you an option "Activities" It does. Upon opening, I see Desktop and Desktop icons, then 'suspended' activities and new activity. |

Yes, that's the upstream translation. The problem is that systemsettings5 has the same as well. We (openSUSE) have to fix this. I don't know why those .desktop files have not been properly translated (according to our modified english name) since 2 years though.
You are probably using the "New Activity" now. Do you get your desktop back if you click on "Desktop"? (if you prefer to have an "old-style" desktop that displays the contents of ~/Desktop on the desktop directly, choose "Desktop Icons") Then maybe delete "New Activity" again. Otherwise just select "Add Widget" and add a folderview widget, or change the layout to "Folder View" (to display the icons on the desktop directly) as luebking explained to you. |
