Unpredictable KScreen (and related) behaviour

Hi,

I am running my KDE Plasma 5 setup in a variety of screen configurations, from internal laptop monitor only over laptop monitor and beamer up to laptop monitor and two external displays on VGA and DVI.

There are a few issues. Almost always, I have to log out and back in again when roaming, e.g. removing the laptop from the docking station. Then, KDE finds a good configuration, or chosoes a known one, pretty well. Sometimes it does not, then Plasma hangs, or one monitor turns unrecoverably black, or something else.

But even if everything concerning the screen works, some strange behaviour in other components persists, namely:

  • The third screen does not get a wallpaper, only a black desktop
  • Panels behave unpredictably and are moved to random screens
  • Some components, e.g. KRunner, get rendered in strange positions, i.e. not in the middle-top of the active screen, but a few pixels outside one of the screens, or something

Additionally, is there a way to configure the wallpaper for *all* screens and all screen configurations? I want the same wallpaper rotation on all screens, no matter hwat I do, but it seems that every new display gets the default wallpaper assigned instead.

Is any of this known and has a workaround? Or can it be due to a broken upgrade path somewhere in the past?

I tried removing all KScreen configuration, but to no avail.

Cheers,
Nik
