Can you still switch to another VT in the client system or ssh into it?

I'd then inspect the still running processes (notably X and ksmserver?) and the system log to figure where things hang (ie. eg. systemd will try to quit some process but that doesn't work)

Once you know where it fails, you can check what fails.
