Running Kubuntu 15.10 (but was happening in 15.04 too I think).
I'm keen to change the file associations for txt files so they open in Kate not LibreOffice Writer. However both through properties dialog in dolphin and in File Associations in System Settings selections do not stick. In system settings with the listing for txt, neither removing an application nor moving it up or down the priority order stick after clicking apply. They revert back to the original order, re-appearing if removed. I did manage to reallocated file associations for rtf files, and png files. thoughts? cheers and thanks in advance, |

Check whether ~/.local/share/applications/mimeapps.list gets rewritten and run "kbuildsycoca5 --noincremental" from konsole and watch out for errors, notably on write permissons.

wow, well ~/.local/share/applications/mimeapps.list does indeed get written appropriately.
" text/plain=org.kde.kate.desktop;libreoffice-writer.desktop;kde4-okularApplication_txt.desktop;wine-extension-ini.desktop;calibre-ebook-viewer.desktop;wine-extension-txt.desktop;calibre-gui.desktop; " How, or rather, what is the best app to read that file referred to using "kbuildsycoca5 --noincremental" ? Kate & nano produce a very hard to read screen with warnings about invalid characters despite the utf-8 encoding. No warnings are returned to the terminal. thanks |

thanks everyone
changed the priority in $HOME/.config/mimeapps.list from text/plain= libreoffice-writer.desktop;focuswriter.desktop; org.kde.kate.desktop; kde4-okularApplication_txt.desktop;wine-extension-ini.desktop; to text/plain=org.kde.kate.desktop; libreoffice-writer.desktop;focuswriter.desktop;kde4-okularApplication_txt.desktop;wine-extension-ini.desktop; now it sticks |
