How to autostart after desktop startup?

I'm running an autostart script to start my workspace in the desired configuration with applications in predefined activities. For that purpose I use dbus commands to switch to the activites/workspaces.

The results are a complete mess probably due to race conditions: the kde startup has obviously not yet finished with initialising the desktop when it starts my script. At least the script is already running while my suse distro displays it's own initialisation image. A little bit later the first simple desktop (without activities and workspaces??) appears and even later the plasma control elements for switching activities/workspaces appear. At that time my script has already finished.

Are there any synchronisation points during kde/plasma startup for which a user can/should wait? And how can a user subscribe to these events?

Or is it a bug in kde? Maybe user scripts should only start in a well defined environment when all desktop functionality is available?
