Hi all,

My system is : Gentoo + KDE Plasma 5.8.4
Processor i7 3.2GHz - 8Go RAM - SSD Disk OCZ Vertex 4

Since I am on Plasma 5.x, after login on SDDM, Plasma needs 30 seconds to load. I am with a SSD disk !!!!
And after loading, Plasma isn't always loaded correctly.

For example, impossible to open MTP devices, Sound applet not shown (and multimedia function doesn't work). I must logout and login, to hope KDE Plasma load sucessfully...

I didn't have this problems with KDE4.

I tried reinstall from scratch my distro, and try an other distro (on the same laptop, on an other partition) but problem (slowness) is the same (Fedora and Mageia).

How can I optimize KDE Plasma ? On the same computer, I tried Cinnamon. Uptime 7seconds (after manual login). For KDE, 32seconds.

Can you help me ?

There was, with the plasma 5.4, problems with the bluetooth: Bug 354230 - Blocking calls from PlasmaNM to BlueZ for 30s - https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=354230

If you look the logs, any error/warning messages or stuck processes ?

At here, from the greeter login message to the konsole up and running (1), about 12 sec:
Code: Select all
Nov 30 20:07:16 archfox sddm[385]: Message received from greeter: Login
.
.
.
Nov 30 20:07:28 archfox cat[4448]: Stop Here !

The plasma devel mailing list has a thread: plugins, caches, startup time - https://mail.kde.org/pipermail/plasma-d ... 59998.html
At here, the plugin caching shaves only about 1 sec off.

(1) Timing done with:

Plasma start time from the systemd journal - searching with: 'Message received from greeter: Login'

Plasma up and running: Starting a Konsole window and running a command:
Code: Select all
printf "Stop Here !" | systemd-cat

and reading the time from the systemd journal - searching with: ' Stop Here !'

I would check the systemd journal: https://www.digitalocean.com/community/ ... stemd-logs
...that is if you are using the systemd.

There are few bug reports of the slow plasma start:
- Bug 360777 - Due to faulty configuration desktop loading time is ~20 seconds longer: https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=360777
- Bug 359611 - Plasmashell loads itself incompletely and with long delays: https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=359611

I would start the debugging with a minimalistic plasma desktop. Just the wallpaper and an empty panel. Is the startup slow with the empty plasma desktop ?

If the mini plasma desktop doesn't have problems then I would add the widgets one by one and check the startup after each widget.

Hi,
I don't use systemd, so i can't check systemd logs :)
I am at work now. I will test that later, and ask you the answer.

Hi,
I created a new user on my system "test".
First login = 27seconds.
Logout, and Login on test user : 7seconds.
Logout and Login on "adrien" user : 7seconds too.
I think there are some files cached at first KDE launch, and it takes time !

Same kind of: viewtopic.php?f=289&t=137511

Maybe you could cooperate ?
If there is a common cause why the startup is slowing down.
