Running KDE Neon 5.8 (plasma 5.8.4, frameworks 5.29.0), AMD Radeon card with dual monitors attached.

Periodically (but way too often), after desktop appears, I notice that right-click doesn't bring up the context menu for the desktop. Also system tray icons are missing. Apps I run after startup have icons, but the usual icons (volume, bluetooth, ...) are missing.

If I compare the current plasma-org.kde.plasma.desktop-appletsrc to a recent one, these lines are missing
Code: Select all
[ActionPlugins][0]
MidButton;NoModifier=org.kde.paste
RightButton;NoModifier=org.kde.contextmenu
wheel:Vertical;NoModifier=org.kde.switchdesktop

[ActionPlugins][1]
RightButton;NoModifier=org.kde.contextmenu

In a desperate moment, I chmod 444 that file - and it still happened (file isn't overwritten, but the problem still occurred)

If I copy a good version of plasma-org.kde.plasma.desktop-appletsrc over, and kquitapp plasmashell ; kstart plasmashell, that fixes it until a future boot. Adding a kbuildsycoca5 after quitting the plasmashell didn't help.

Any ideas appreciated

Thanks to all who responded xD

The answer for me was to disable all of the eye candy (settings => desktop behavior => desktop effects). If the problem occurred every time, it might be possible to identify a particular effect, but it's probably not worth the effort right now.
