Video update/refresh problem

Thu Mar 16, 2017 11:01 pm
Hi,

This problem is difficult to explain but it has plagued me for at least two versions of KDE and on multiple computers. After the computer has been logged in for some time (days) random applications and even the main menu bar will stop refreshing. Sections of the application window may even flicker. One example is GKrellm, it will just stop as though you paused it. But if I click anywhere on the desktop it will update. I have to close the application and restart it then it will function normally for a few days. Again, this is not just GKrellm. Every application I run can do this.

Common elements are KUbuntu last two LTS versions, Multi-monitor setup using Nvidia based graphic cards (not the same models) and using proprietary drivers. I could not get Nouveau to work the way I wanted in multi-monitor mode. Also the motherboards are Intel based.

Not sure what to look for to solve this.

Hello rschnic !

I know it's an old post ;D , but I have exactly the same issue (and many updates of KDE since). Did you, or someone else, found or have a solution ?

You mentioned uptime > 1 day. I'm not sure, but it seems happen more often after using "sleeping" mode or a long uptime over 1 day.

I didn't have this issue with another distro / desktop (Mint cinamon).
I've tried Wayland but it's not better and many applications I use are not working (not even launching)
I also tried many things in display settings, but none working.

My configuration :
  • Operating System: KDE neon 5.25
  • KDE Plasma Version: 5.25.4
  • KDE Frameworks Version: 5.97.0
  • Qt Version: 5.15.5
  • Kernel Version: 5.15.0-46-generic (64-bit)
  • Graphics Platform: X11
  • Processors: 8 × AMD FX(tm)-8320 Eight-Core Processor
  • Memory: 31.3 Gio of RAM
  • Graphics Processor: AMD Radeon ™ R9 380 Series

I really love KDE but it's really annoying working with this problem.
