Optimizing Plasma startup speed?

Sat Apr 01, 2017 7:35 pm
I've Neon installed on SSD and I'm trying to optimize startup speed. Currently I managed to get:
Startup finished in 3.354s (kernel) + 1.056s (userspace) = 4.410s

Still though plasma alone takes about 5-6 seconds more. I know that these are ridiculous low startup times, but on my old laptop I get about 2:30 and that's pretty long.
Are there tools to show what plasma modules are taking longer to load? I can help here reporting if I catch something.

Earlier at the KDE Forums:

- KDE Plasma 5.8 ... slow slow slow on SSD: viewtopic.php?f=66&t=137442
- Slow startup: viewtopic.php?f=289&t=137511

KDE is standing and falling with the Qt - the Qt 5.8 is promising:

- Qt QML Performance improvements in Qt 5.8.0: http://blog.qt.io/blog/2017/03/08/qt-qm ... -qt-5-8-0/

- New Features in Qt 5.8: https://wiki.qt.io/New_Features_in_Qt_5.8
Implemented caching of code and data structures generated from .qml/.js files to disk to reduce start-up time and memory consumption. The resulting .qmlc and .jsc cache files are memory mapped.

At here the promise seems to keep:

With the Plasma 5.8 & Qt 5.7 (or was it 5.6 ?) - viewtopic.php?f=66&t=137442#p367796
The Plasma start was more than 10 s.

Now with the Plasma 5.9 & Qt 5.8 it is about 5 s -> https://youtu.be/CAYogA-NIjs

The Neon hasn't upgraded to the Qt 5.8: Bug 376468 - Upgrade Qt to 5.8 - https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=376468 -> https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=376468#c1

Thank you for lots of info. It seems that this is QT issue, so I'll have to wait for upgrade. Still though my sddm.log is empty, don't know why...
