Hi, I moved my machine from undocked to docked (two monitors) this morning like I have done before for months without an issue. But today the two monitors only showed a black screen. I am able to get to tty1 via Shift-Alt-F1 so tried to reboot. Didn't help. Tried un-docked, didn't work either. Means I am now left with a broken system.
My challenge is that I have no idea where to start with troubleshooting. What process should I look for, any config files which may be corrupted should I check, etc. Considering that the issue ocures before I even log on I would assume it‘s got nothing to do with user settings but rather some standard config? Any help would be really appreciated! As far as the current state is concerned: - Boot (and shutdown) shows the kde logo 5.11.0 - Neon is up to date as of yesterday / today - Screen is black - Mouse works and changes shape as I move over the area where the logon screen is expected - Even though the screen is all black the system seems to be working, I can logon blind, which I can confirm by new processes running under my name doing a ps in tty1 Update: After spending hours and hours on searching through logs etc. I have finally given up today. Installed a backup (thank you Veeam) and was up and running fine again. A few hours in, I decided to apply the updates which have been rolling out since last week, mainly the update from Neon 5.10 to 5.11.1 Update went through without an issue, kept on working for an hour or so, then Plasma crashed, an error window was shown in the panel but I wasn't able to navigate to it, nor would it come up via Alt-Tab. Decided to reboot and got a bricked laptop again ![]() This time the screen just stays black after it showed the Plasma logo and the 5.11.1 version. Docked or undocked doesn't matter. Ctrl-Alt-1 to get to the console is possible but the screen is flickering like hell and keyboard input get's through only randomly. Impossible to type in a hidden password. Anyone else experiencing such problems with the latest update? Final update: After a few more crashes and restores I noticed that there is an updated nVidia Graphics driver. Installed 384.90 followed by updating the pending Neon updates and the machine is still running! ![]() If it needed the new driver or installing simply fixed something which was somehow broken I don't know, just glad I have a working system again!
