Setting folder view

Mon Jul 23, 2018 1:44 pm
I created a new user for my grandson. When I brought it up it was in Activities mode. I want to change it to look like windows as that is what he uses at home. I cannot figure ou how to change from activities view to any thing else. I have looked in System settings but cannot find anything there. Also the setting in System settings differ from what I see when I logon with my id. How do I change from activities to desktop?
Thank you,

Just for reference, what versions of KDE & Plasma Desktop and which linux distribution are you using?

To get files/folders to appear on the desktop like in Windows, right-click on the Desktop and go to Desktop Settings. In there, there should be a dropdown for the Layout, where you can select Folder View. By default this will then show the contents of the ~/Desktop folder.

(Virtual) Desktops and Activities are other concepts which allow you to have different spaces for your tasks. Desktops allow you to have separation between the different windows you have open, while Activities also allow you to have separation in the desktop layout and various other settings.

I believe my version of kde is 5.10.5-1. I am runnng Fedora FC26 64 bit.
When I right click on the desktop I get the following choices:

Change Backround
Display settings
Settings

There is no Desktop settings listed or even in the Settings menu.

I cannot even fidure out how to add something to the screen such as an icon for k3b.

Hmm..
I suspect you may have something running other than Plasma as your desktop, because with Plasma you should see a slightly longer list which should include e.g (un)lock widgets, leave and/or log out, add widgets, add panels, etc.
Have you used the Nautilus file manager for anything (or any of its derivatives)? Nautilus (and those of its derivatives which haven't disabled this behavior) will take over the desktop when launched unless you tell it not to with the --no-desktop flag.

You can go into System Settings -> Window Behavior -> Window Rules and click New... In the dialog that pops up, click Detect Window Properties, then click on the desktop. It will open another dialog which displays various details about the selected window.

I am confused. I went to KDE System Settings. Here is what I see:

https://drive.google.com/open?id=1iDbgQ ... ANZXmaWqK5

I see Desktop Behavior but no Window Behavior. I looked under Window Management and found Window Behavior. There is no New button. There is a Windows Rules and if I click there, i can select New and go through and create a new rule ( i called it Detect) but nothing happens.

BTW, I upgraded to FC28 if that makes any difference.

Help?

Looks like you found the correct path (at my day job I'm still on Plasma 4 and the modules were rearranged a bit in Plasma 5).

When in the dialog for creating a new window rule, there should be a button to Detect Window Properties. When you click on it it should change the cursor so that when you click on a window it should pop up a confirmation dialog showing the various properties of the window you clicked on. You can use that to determine what exactly is providing the desktop "window".
