I'm afraid I really have no idea what's causing this. I get the normal "This action needs root privileges" dialogue, including the password line-edit line. Once I provide the necessary password, the ownership flags are changed. This is using a rather standard OpenSUSE 11.0 and 11.1 install of KDE 4.1.3 (and no difference when using 4.1.73, i.e. a preview of what will become KDE 4.2). 32-bit in the case of OpenSUSE 11.0, and 64-bit in the case of 11.1.
OpenSUSE 11.4, 64-bit with KDE 4.6.4

Hello all.... Seems like what the original poster wanted was a "login as superuser" function in either dolphin or konqueror. The contributers to this thread have offered a "workaround" for the issue, but I wanted to bring the discussion back to the original intent of the question.
Wonder why the developers don't have a menu sub-item function or selection (maybe under "file" or "settings" for "login as superuser)...? How hard could this be to implement, really? Should have been done by 4.1.0

There is a nice service menu entry on kubuntu, it can be found under actions:
With that you can edit every text file as super user. The file should be saved under $HOME/.kde(4)/share/kde4/services/ServiceMenus |

Just for your information, trunk does have two super user icons. One for Konsole, another for Dolphin. disturbingly, the Dolphin one works beautifully. The command executed by dolphinsu.desktop is
This when executed gives the following command in KDE Su:
