Hi,
on my desktop, deleting files isn't possible any more via SHIFT+Delete. A friend of mine has the same problem since a few months. Throwing things into the trash can via plain Delete still works. SHIFT+Delete in Dolphin works too. Could somebody please tell me where to find the setting to make SHIFT+Delete on desktop work again? Many thanks Jeff |

I'd start by checking the shortcut setting in Dolphin. Go to Control - Configure Shortcuts. Search for delete and check that the Delete entry is set to Shift+Del. Beyond that, I'd check the desktop settings by right clicking the desktop and choose Configure Desktop. The layout should be set to Folder View. If it already is and the Dolphin shortcut is set, maybe try changing the layout to Desktop, apply and then change back to Folder View. Just throwing out ideas. Hope this helps.

Hello Eric,
many thanks for your help. In Dolphin, things are set as you described, and indeed SHIFT+Delete does work in Dolphin. Already a few days back I had run into another severe Problem with KDE, when it started to randomly show me a scrollbar on the right and blocked all icons from access. The desktop was completely unusable. After a lot of searching I learned that there is no good solution for this well known, years old bug, and someone had suggested to switch from "folder view" to "desktop" and then back again, after a few days. With "desktop", at least the scrollbar was gone and I was able to open programs again by clicking on the icons, I was able to add new icons and so on. However, a few features like "create a text document" are missing in the desktop's context menu. Just now I tried switching back to folder view, and all of a sudden I have every icon twice, with icons partially overlapping. Everything looks rather garbled. Unfortunately, SHIFT+Delete doesn't work, no matter which view I choose. Best regards Jeff |

The duplication is probably because it is showing both the contents of ~/Desktop as well as the widgets that had been added to the desktop when the view was set to "desktop".
Depending on which copies you want to keep, you can either open dolphin to ~/Desktop and delete things from there or right-click on the widget icons on the desktop and select Remove this Icon. (another idea for your consideration is to set the desktop view to "desktop" so you just get widgets, but then add one or more Folder View widgets to the desktop. These Folder View widgets can then be configured with different filters or even different directories as an alternative way to organize the stuff on your desktop)

Many thanks Airdrik, that sounds like a great idea. I will give this a try. Even after lots of trying, I have not been able to correct the missing SHIFT+Delete functionality. Since I want to reinstall the complete system anyway, I will give up for now, and I'm hoping not to run into the bug a second time. |
