Recommend me a good weather widget?

Wed May 15, 2019 2:30 am
Hi all, new here. First thing I should say is that I am a linux newb. I am just coming over from Windows 10. I'm trying to make the switch and ditch the dumpster fire that is Windows. I am hoping that someone could recommend me a good weather widget that actually works well, down in the taskbar. I just installed KDE Neon and I noticed that the weather widget that comes with it... has a few issues. It doesn't actually display anything in the taskbar, other than the sun with a few clouds around it. There is an awesome widget for Linux Mint with XFCE. I loved that widget, but Linux Mint just isn't for me. I have settled on KDE Neon as the Linux OS that I'm going to use.

The widget I'm referring to would show the outside temp, and cycle through wind speed, humidity, and a few other things if you wanted it to. And it was all down in the taskbar. So I'm hoping that someone here knows of a better functioning weather widget for the taskbar in KDE Neon. And the means to install it, as I find that if something is not in the Software Center, I have difficulty installing it.

Thanks!

Taskbar widgets are usually hoverable and/or clickable, showing popups with additional information.
In the case of the Weather Forecast widget which may be installed by default, hovering over the widget shows a description of the current conditions and the temperature; while clicking shows a pop up with the full forecast. This widget also can be configured to show the temperature next to the icon of the current conditions by right-clicking on the widget, selecting Configure Weather Forecast and checking the option in the Appearance tab.

Additional widgets can be found in the KDE Store (which can also be accessed from the Add Widgets panel by clicking Get New Widgets, or using the Discover package manager). I would recommend you try them out to see if there is one which fits well enough with what you are looking for. These widgets are made by community members so we can't guarantee that any of them scratch your itch in the way you intend but you may find one which fits close enough or that provides a set of features that you prefer.

If none of them is found to be satisfactory, we can explore other options including assistance with configuring other widgets to provide the information you want or with modifying one of the weather widgets to present the information you want in the way you want it.

Thank you for the reply. I was hoping to find one that behaves similar to the default weather widget in Linux Mint... or at least I think its one of the stock widgets. Anyway it just sits down in the bottom right, in the taskbar. It cycles through the outside temperature, the humidity, and the wind speed. Are you aware of any that function that way? You don't have to hover over it with the mouse, you just have to glance at it. That is the part that I'm looking for. Its like the clock, its just always there.

Assuming you've tried those other widgets and none of them work the way you expect, you can try out kargos which is a port of a couple of other customizable widgets for Mac and Gnome. While not a dedicated Weather widget, it looks like it is sufficiently configurable (via plugins that you can get from https://github.com/matryer/bitbar-plugins) to be usable as such, including the cycle-between-results view you are looking for.
