I’m having trouble with setting up an external monitor. It’s not a bug per se, but more a massive annoyance and a great UX optimisation possibility IMO.

I have two laptops connecting to the external monitor and am switching between the two inputs regularly.

The set-up is as follows:

Image

• the left laptop’s upper left and external monitor’s lower left corners align, which should be simple enough
• the right laptop is a bit more tricky, as there is just a small part of the edge where the two touch

I really like how much KScreen has improved and that it covers the most typical set-ups already in short-cuts, but those don’t help me here.

What happens is that if I switch the input on the monitor, the laptop still pretends like the monitor exists, so all the windows are “shown” on the external monitor instead of being moved down to the primary screen. (On the other hand, it‘s really cool that if I close the lid of the laptop, all the windows and panels automatically move to the external monitor)

So, this means that I need to switch between different set-ups in KScreen regularly. But the shortcut buttons only allow me to:
• disable laptop monitor,
• disable external monitor,
• clone the picture (great for presentations),
• position external monitor left right of the laptop.

Apart from disabling the external monitor, none of these are helpful for me in this set up.

It would be great, if one could create their own shortcut (perhaps even to replace one of the defaults) there. For example, I would love to replace the left/right aligning buttons for the set-ups I actually use.

Currently I use the short-cut button in KScreen’s widget to disable the external screen, but then need to go through the main setup window of KScreen app each time I want to re-enable the external monitor.

Am I missing something? How have others gone about this? I’m pretty sure I’m not the only one with a setup that is not identical monitors in one horizontal line.

On a similar note, this set up also triggers this bug (est. 2015):
