Hi
Not sure if this is the right place for this... let me know if not. Anyway, on my wife's account when she logs out kwin-x11 fails to close, so that the next time she logs in she doesn't get a desktop environment, and when I log in kwin-x11 under her userid is running and using up all the processor. This happens intermittently, maybe once in three logouts. It doesn't appear to be anything to do with what she's running as I can make it fail by logging in and out a few times without running anything in between. The only way out of this is to reboot the machine. This is a fresh install of Kubuntu on a new machine - a Dell 3881 (which is certified for Ubuntu). This problem never happens with my account and both of our accounts are set up more of less the same. Both accounts have admin privileges on the system The system details are Operating System: Kubuntu 20.10 KDE Plasma Version: 5.19.5 KDE Frameworks Version: 5.74.0 Qt Version: 5.14.2 Kernel Version: 5.8.0-45-generic OS Type: 64-bit Processors: 12 × Intel® Core™ i5-10400 CPU @ 2.90GHz Memory: 7.5 GiB of RAM Graphics Processor: Mesa Intel® UHD Graphics 630 Any ideas where to start? Cheers |

Does she save the session on logout? Is this different to your setup?
Running Kubuntu 22.10 with Plasma 5.26.3, Frameworks 5.100.0, Qt 5.15.6, kernel 5.19.0-23 on Ryzen 5 4600H, AMD Renoir, X11
FWIW: it's always useful to state the exact Plasma version (+ distribution) when asking questions, makes it easier to help ... |

Hi,
Thanks for the reply No, we are both set to start a new a new session. I've been through the logs when her session has hung and there's nothing (I can see) that indicates any sort of failure although I may have missed something I've realised there's one thing different between our two sessions. She spends a lot of time listening to audio files - she's learning Italian - whereas I don't really listen to anything. So, maybe a sound card issue? I need to spend a bit of time experimenting here. Occasionally on initial login after a reboot there is no sound (and the sound icon has a line through it) but logging out and back in resolves this and it's fine from then on. I have just discovered the "KillUserProcess=no" config setting and have changed it to "yes" and since that it hasn't failed, however she's only logged on two or three times. I'll update this in a few days and let you know if that has changed anything Thanks Samo |

Hi
I've sorted this problem out. In the file /etc/systemd/logind.conf I've set KillUserProcesses=yes (and obviously removed the comment symbol) and my wife's kwin-x11 isn't left running after she logs out, so when she logs back in again it doesn't hang. It now takes measurably longer to complete the log out -- six or seven seconds as opposed to one or two -- but that's not really anything to be concerned about. Thanks for looking Samo |
