KDE 4.2: Dear Developers, we could have the fading effect between one wallpaper and another if the "slideshow wallpaper" type is enabled in Appearence Settings? :shade:

The feature freeze is currently in effect, which means code for features is no longer allowed to be committed to trunk, which means it will be KDE 4.3 at the earliest. However wallpapers are now plugins, so it is possible that someone will post a modified version of the Slideshow plugin that does this.

Please file a feature request on the KDE bug tracker, as KDE developers do not trawl the forum for feature requests.
