Desktop mode/service menu issues

Mon Jan 03, 2022 10:32 am
Does anyone happen to know if there are actually fixes for this or even bothered with? 1)There's no way I can put url shortcuts on the desktop in desktop mode. If the desktop is set to home, the issue isn't there. When in desktop mode, it just creates a text file. For now, clipboard, note or todo widget are the only options to save a url too.
2) The service menu copy/move to doesn't work. At least, not on the desktop items nore in the folder widget. This issue started since Kubuntu 21.04 ( currently on 21.10). I made two scripts to do just that. It's kinda annoying though since the service menu does work in dolphin itself, but not on the desktop or folder widget. So in dolphin, I'm having both the scripts I made myself AND the service menu. Like I said, I made my own two servicemenus, so it's...ok,.. I guess. But not everyone knows how to do that. Furthermore, since the copy/moveto entries are dynamically generated, there's no servicemenu file for it. https://imgur.com/a/cEf1FPk

If you mean Desktop Layout versus the Folder View layout, this is the expected result, no files or folders on the desktop, only widgets.

If you are talking about the Folder View layout for the desktop (the default), I have zero issues dragging a url from a browser to the desktop. I do get the move, Copy, Link options, and using Link makes a shortcut as opposed to a php, html, or similar text file. Also the Create New >> Link to location works. But direct copy paste will create a text file.

The rest, I don't know. May be worth a bug report? I did not quickly find any related to this.

Hi C. Yeah, my bad ( Dutch speaking). Yes, I can drop url's or create url shortcuts when in folder view. Not so when the desktop is set to..well..desktop. Until kubuntu 21.04 I could do that. (I do have files and folders on the desktop view btw.)
As for the other issue. No matter what you set the desktop layout to ( desktop, home or a custom directory), the copy/moveTo doesn't work.
I'm afraid this is a locale bug. In Debian kde, it's much worse. Debian seems to mix up Desktop directory with, in Dutch, Bureaublad. That results in a mess, some service menus being part of that mess. In Kubuntu and some others, a kde install will automatically set the location Desktop ( English) to my locale Bureaublad (Dutch). Not so in debian. If you change it under locations it can get pretty messy. So, I have a feeling that current Kubuntu doesn't see my Bureaublad as a valid directory or something. At least, not what copy/move is concerned. The zenity move script I made uses the kdemv5 command independantly, regardless which directory I'm in.
If I recall correctly, this has already been filed as a bug.

It works for me on my Kubuntu 21.10 and KDE Neon systems. Dragging a url from a browser adds a launcher to the desktop, in Desktop mode - my preferred layout.

The second issue with missing copy-to/move-to service menus on desktop and folder view widgets happens for me as well (English), do you have a link to the bug report?

Should've added ....correctly. As in "if I recall correctly". So no, I'm afraid not. Wasn't reported by me, that's for sure.
Yeah, really annoying. Especially because I use the desktop view and the folder widget on the panel is set to desktop for easy drag n drop ( as attachments for example).
That's why I made those two service menus.
Ps: I checked an older version of Kubuntu and the create a url link works in desktop view whereas in Kubuntu 21.10 it only works in folder view.

Re: Desktop mode/service menu issues

I think I have the url issue figured out. I used this "set as wallpaper" service menu. When I tried the regular right click desktop>choose wallpaper and set a wallpaper I could drag and create url shortcuts. I tried with a wallpaper python script which I use in Gwenview and it also worked. So, it looks like the particular wallpaper service menu was causing the issue. Switching the executive direcory to the python script in the service menu now does the trick. I installed a different wallpaper service menu to check and it seems to work as well.

Edit: The drag n drop url has gone totally bonkers now. Dragging to desktop results in multiple files ( url shortcuts, all copies ) allover the home directory. Unusable feature.
